Okay... so you know that whole campus selection thing at UAB and how it has to be in before you can be accepted, etc. I am absolutely sure I completed it and it showed up as complete on my status page the day after my interviews. Only I just checked again and it was not filled out. So I did it again, obviously. Anyone else have this happen? And should I tell the admissions office about it?

Mine went away last week. I emailed, and they said to resubmit it.

wht exactly did they say?
cz i havent heard yet?
does that mean im rejected?
QUOTE=kdel953]I called the admissions office today and they said the acceptances have been sent out as well as the waitlist. so i guess that means i didnt get in...?[/QUOTE]

Did they mention if it had affected how you stood in the admissions process? I'm thinking it would since they make such a big deal about not sending you an acceptance until that's submitted. It's such a bizarre process.

Hey, y'all.

FYI for all those still waiting to hear from admissions (like me), I asked Mark Martin in the financial aid office whether we needed to wait until we are accepted to start filling out financial aid forms since several deadlines fall on the 15th of April. Here's his reply:

Yes. You will receive an e-mail from admissions when you are accepted to the packet on-line. You can fill out the FAFSA now. It can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov

So, no, we don't need do anything with the school itself until we're accepted, but we do need to go ahead and knock out FAFSA. I'm sure pretty much everyone but me knew this already, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post it here. Besides, it's a free bump. 🙂

Hey Alabamians,

I went to Grissom High School in Huntsville for a few years before moving to Texas, and I'm applying to med school in a few months.

How open is U of AL to out of state students? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

You need to be pretty competitive to apply to UAB as an OOS student; I think it's like 90% AL residents vs. 10% OOS. But there are a few of us from OOS who got in on this thread. You have ties to the state, and that definitely helps. In my case, I'm a former state resident like you as well as an alum, and they considered those to be strong ties. 🙂 Also, if you are interested in a career in either research or rural medicine, definitely let them know that, because they are very interested in recruiting those people. I know that played a big role for me as well.

Thanks! Glad to hear someone from OOS got in!

I am OOS and got in. I had five interviews when I was there (I guess they were trying to grill me), and one of them was this big-wig doc (forgot his name) and he was saying that UAB is trying to attract more high quality applicants from OOS. The main reason he said was that they are getting a lot of research funding, but in order to gain more widespread acceptance and continue moving up in the ranks they need to become more like a Michigan, who accepts a lot of really strong OOS applicants. This is good for out-of-staters, but i am afraid its probably bad for in-staters.

I'm sure they'll still give Alabamians (and Southerners in general) a strong preference, because they want to recruit people who will actually go there. I'm from FL, and you are from a Southern state as well, if I remember correctly. I doubt that's a coincidence. 😉

Are any of you folks going to apply for scholarships?

My motivation is sitting right around the level of zilch, but I'm wondering what sort of people get scholarships to med school...

People just like you and me, except maybe a little smarter or poorer or better at writing essays or able to qualify for grants from the National League for the Promotion of Myotonic Goats as Rural Entertainment or, well, you get the point.

But a couple of lousy essays may be worth $10k or so... 😉

Wow.

And the true nerdliness emerges...

Nice guys, nice.

Non-medical note, UAB just hired former Indiana coach Mike Davis to replace Mike Anderson as head men's basketball coach.

as a huge Indiana basketball fan, I am happy to see him down in birmingham. I'm excited to see how he does down here.

Oh I am all about the nerds. 🙂

P.S. Does anyone know when our white coat ceremony is? I am assuming the Saturday after orientation, maybe in the afternoon?

I thought I saw a calendar on the school's website, but I just went back and couldn't find it. 😕

I got one and I didn't think I would get one. So it is best to apply for the scholarships.

Can you tell me what scholarships there are and how to apply for them?

In the financial aid packet, there is an universal scholarship form that you need to fill out and send back to the school. I did that and on the day I graduated from school I got an email saying that I had gotten a scholarship. No one is really going to get anything huge, but any bit helps. I can say that I am offically corporately sponsored by the Walker Drug Company.

Hey, folks.

How many of us are still awaiting any word at all (ie, have not yet been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted)? Has anyone spoken with or heard from the school in the last few days?

Best of luck to everyone still waiting. 🙂

Hey guys, good luck... :luck:

Still waiting here too.

Does anyone know anything about South Alabama? I've been on hold since I interviewed on February 1st.

I didn't apply to USA (too far from home 😳 ), but the husband of one of my co-workers did. He was waitlisted at UAB a month or so ago from a February interview, but has yet to hear anything at all from South. I'm not sure when he interviewed there, though.

Good luck! 👍

Random FYI, financial aid award info showed up in the mail today. Woohoo for massive debt!

I've been on hold at USA since my November interview. And nothing yet from UAB. I guess no news is good news.

Actually, it was in October. When you start forgetting when your interview was and still no response, that's probably a bad sign.

When did you finish your forms? I just added parental information so I probably won't be getting mine any time soon...

Mine came today as well. I think I filled them out about a week (or less) after they went up on the website, all that's required is the FAFSA and the UAB online form (FADS). Hooray for taking the maximum allowed!

BooMed said:

Yeah, I sent in FAFSA and FADS maybe a month ago? Maybe less than that, don't remember. All the paper stuff to turn in is still sitting here on my desk, so obviously it isn't vital...

BTW I made facebook friend requests to everyone I could pin down. If you got it, confirm! If you didn't, give everybody your facebook account! I mean c'mon, we're college students, facebook is life, right?

does anyone know what happened at last week's town hall meeting? was anything decided about switching to P/F?

We took an online vote, but our vote will not be the deciding factor. The administration will still do what they want.

Any idea when they will make a decision? Are they going to release the results of the vote?

FYI for all still waiting, I got my wait-list announcement this morning, so there must be another batch getting sent out today. I'm in the lower third of the list, so barring an act of God I'll be reapplying. Best of luck to everyone. 🙂

Oh man... good luck Ferreed. 🙂

I heard that one year they actually did go through the whole wait list, so you never know...

By the way, did they ever agree to consider you in state for this year? What about next year?

Believe it or not, reason prevailed and they actually did change me to an in-state applicant. I'm not yet sure whether that carries over of if I'll have to reapply for reclassification, but I'll ask in May when I also ask for their input on improving my application.

It's good to hear that they've gone through their entire list of alternates at some point in the past. I wholly expect to be a re-applicant next year at this point, but there's always room for a glimmer of hope. Thanks! 😉

I got my rejection from UAB today. I can't say that I'm surprised; my gpa is way low, and my 30 MCAT wasn't good enough to make up for it. Just thought I would give you guys a heads up. If you haven't gotten an email by now, it's probably going to be a sad thin envelope in the mail. Looks like I'll be heading to KCOM or WVSOM unless South Alabama is stupid enough to accept me. Just means I get to learn OMT. I know you're all way jealous. 😛 😀

Hey guys I am about a year away from applying but had a preliminary question for those who are planning on attending UAB.

I understand tuition to be about 11,000 a year in-state. Does anyone know about how much it would cost to get a nice apartment downtown, 1-2 bed rooms?

I guess I was thinking about how much debt I would have after going to UAB, which would probably the cheapest option available since I live in Alabama.

I lived in Homewood when I first got to UAB, and it was really nice. I paid $450 for a 2 bed, 2 bath, but that was over five years ago, so assume it would probably be like $500 now. The place was called Ski Lodge, and it's less than a two mile drive from campus, like one exit south on the highway. There are actually three Ski Lodge complexes. They'll give you money off for your first month's rent, too. The other place where I lived that I liked was off of Highland Avenue near Caldwell Park. It was really nice living there too; I love the Highland area, but you'll probably either pay more or end up in a dump. My last semester was down in Hoover I think (maybe Vestavia?) near where that Bruno's and Sam's Club are. I forget what the whole plaza is called, but it's huge. Anyway, the apartments were ridiculously overpriced, and fighting traffic up the Red Mountain Expressway every day sucks the big one. I wouldn't recommend doing that.

If you want to live downtown as in on the Northside (like in a loft), there are a lot of great options, and getting to school takes mere minutes. (Or you can walk like me.)

I am looking at ads to find out prices... and none of them say prices. Hmm.

Okay just did some internet searches, and why is it so difficult to find an apartment online?

Anyway, lofts are probably a little more than other places, but they are generally gorgeous places and perfect for one or two people. I like living downtown, but it's probably not for everyone, and I do miss having a yard. It is sort of cool though, and traffic is never a problem.

I rented a loft downtown for two years. Two bedroom, one bath, controlled-access parking garage, 900 per month.

A year ago Jemison flats was leasing one-room loft apartments for around 650 or 700 a month.

I rented an apartment in Southside for several years. The one bedroom I had then rented for 280 per month. These days, after the recent rennovation, it costs ~600 per month.

Some med & dental students rent homes in the neighborhoods near campus. This costs between 1200 to 2000 per month, depending on neighborhood, size, quality, etc.

A good option a friend of mine did was to buy a small condo in town. He lived in it through dental school, and is about to sell it before going to his residency at harvard. He will make a profit on the sale, so in a sense he paid nothing for rent while at school.

I want to live in a city where I have to rely on my car as little as possible. I love walking places, I got University of Montevallo right now (south of birmingham) and I can walk to all the restaraunts and walk from one side of campus to the other it is really great. But to get to campus I have to drive 20 minutes from home, and to go to work I have to drive 20 minutes to work (UAB highlands, formerly Healthsouth Medical Center in Birmingham).

So long story short I've been considering all the different places I should apply to for medical school and I am thinking about moving out of Alabama for medical school if I get accepted to somewhere fancy like Vanderbilt or Boston. I know I'll owe like a bajillion dollars but for some reason I feel like I need to get out of Alabama, the heat makes me crazy I think.

Argh, me too. It's the only thing that I really, really dislike here. Even now it is already almost 90 and I feel like I'm going to die. I love walking places too, but the heat makes it so gross. I'm thinking about getting a Vespa to ride to school.

But I also hate the long, long, looooong winters of the Northeast, and the nine months of rain in the Northwest. Hmm, maybe California is the state for me? Or Colorado?

Did you know that there's this whole club of people in downtown/southside/forest park who are vespa enthusiasts. I see them getting together for functions sometimes...dozens of vespas parked in front of a cafe or at a park. Now you can infiltrate their club and let me know what is really going on with all those people.

Yes and they totally have a website... hold on let me find it...

Shoot, they must have taken it down. It was really funny. I have tried to infiltrate their group when they all go to La Reunion but without my own scooter... well I'm just not in their league.

Here is another funny B'ham scooter group. She Devils
