i've always wanted to do crew, but i think getting up at 5 am is a lot different than being on the water at 5am and ready to row as hard as you can
Yes, yes, yes, but really, do you need to do more than roll out of bed and show up? I mean, I don't need to shower, shave, and get a tie on. And the Hudson's just a mile away from my place. I could run that in ten minutes easy. So we're talking getting up at 4:50am, which is completely different than getting up at 5am.

And that's assuming that Devin isn't just pulling our leg (oar?) on this one.

-VK - which 'VK' are you? There's two on the student website.

It's not too hard. I filled mine with hearsay and generally stole material from other sources.

Have you got a place to live yet?

So you're homeless for awhile? What's your plan?

right now i have no idea. i'm a staff member at a camp in upstate ny so i might just suck up the 2 hour commute to spend more time at camp or get a hotel for the 23rd-24th night.
if not i could always grab my sleeping bag and camp out on Dana ave... such a bad idea....

That's awesome. I had an econ prof who decided to become homeless for a week. He said the experience really changed his perspective.

Anyways, I'll have a couch available, so send me a PM, and we'll figure it out.

what camp? i had a friend from college who's a counselor at ramapo camp for kids north of the city. i think she's still there.

Hey all,

Another AMC 2010er here. Can't wait to meet everyone really soon! Is anyone else getting super excited? Its all I can think about these days

i'll be at camp chardi kala, its a Sikh youth camp off of 17

Whats goin on everybody? I'm wicked excited about meeting everybody. Finally a different experience, new people, new conversation, should be good. I hope our class year is tight. I know in some med. schools, the class sometimes goes out in groups or does fun contests throughout the year for class spirit. I hope we can do those kind of things.

So orientation is going to be a little scary, not really knowing anyone, first impressions. It's like starting college all over again except in a high school class size. I'm rambling. So what interests you people, music, working out, any sports, any unique hobbies? Our first year is the most relaxed year, we gotta take opportunity of that to do different stuff and freakin enjoy it. Later peeps. AMC prideeeeee.

I wish we could bring our parents to the white coat ceremony, mine really want to come. Hopefully they can come for the reception if its long enough and people stick around.

considering it's really for the parents it's a shame that that amc says they don't have the space.

Speaking of that, is anyone else bringing family to the reception? I wonder how many people actually did from past years.

Mine are coming anyway.

if they're around, but i don't think it's really worth it at that point.

It's not too far of a drive for my parents so I think they'll come no matter what I say just to take some pictures here and there. Just gotta plan it in such a way so that they're in the building when the reception starts to optimize the time.

I honestly think they should just get a tent or something and do it outside, like a mini-graduation. Thats probably not so cost effective, but its only once in 4 years.

Actually it'd be every year - every class has a white coat.

I told my dad not to come. He and I both want him to be there, but with orientation lasting all day that week and student activities every night, he'd be able to see me all of what, 20 minutes? Is it worth him flying cross-country for that? I'd rather him come for Thanksgiving. He did, however, make me promise to take pictures.

To get that first impresion stuff out of the way, I'll just let you know now - I hate you all.

I bet that there's some jerks in our class (after all, they DID let me in), but from what I've seen on the student webpage, I think we're generally a group of bright, motivated students. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a situation where you'd be MORE likely to meet a good friend by randomly saying hi to the people next to you in class.

Folks, also remember to get all of your transcripts, health info, loans, coat size, etc. stuff taken care of quick. August 1 is coming up, and you need to get your paperwork in ASAP.

By the way, at this post-rate, this thread's count will beat out the RWJ, JHU and NYMC threads. Let's keep it up people!

haha i was just taking a look at that and we're way behind

WHERE ARE THE AMC PEOPLE....we can't make this thread into 15 pages on our own, we just can't do it.

Wanna bet?

It's probaby a good thing - that means that the Albany Med kiddos are hard at work, instead of posting out of boredom. 😉

VK - whoops - I was looking at SUNY Downstate, not NYMC. But we've blown away Brown, UI, KU, WVU, SLU, UCSD and Dartmouth.

Is anyone planning to do research at amc, and have you considered the MDDR program? Are you going to try to work during the academic year?

Too bad AMC's gym sucks.. and the nearby pharmacy school's gym, which is much better, doesnt let us in! Apparently the YMCA off of Lark has a special subscription for students at $100/yr. Has anyone looked into that? I've heard registration for the special is only during a particular limited time but not sure when that is.

you know the brochure they first sent me mentions a newly renovated gym for students.

haha I wonder where this wonderful gym is! The one I've seen there is super small and has no ventiliation (except for a large fan) - just a couple tightly lined up treadmills/bikes and some random weight lifting stuff.

A 2nd year said they started a renovation at the end of last year, if you read back througgh this thread, I think.

Nope. Not at all.

I liked drdoctor's suggestion about working with someone with ties at RPI and AMC. I tried setting up a meeting with Dr. DePaola last time I was in Albany, but that fell through because of a certain third party's poor punctuality. I did get to walk around RPI's campus, and it's stunning. I can't wait to get up to Albany and see (for myself) what's going on there, and have classes start.

The third party.. that’s funny.

I noticed your mdapp profile- you have done some really amazing things. 👍 I'm looking forward to meeting you and others with accomplishments and life experiences like yours in the fall. 🙂

Working with Dr. DePaola seems like a great idea with your background, and her research seems really interesting, especially because of the overlap between engineering and medicine. I'll have to look into her stuff. I'm in the same program as drdoctor … doing research on the intracellular mechanisms that cause endothelial cell migration in relation to angiogenesis during wound healing, which relates a bit with some of Dr. DePaola’s work. I'm sure she'd be a great resource.

And RPI’s campus stunning? Haha… you must have been there on a really sunny day! Ok ok, I’m kidding, its not horrible, especially with all the recent new architecture projects and repaved walkways… but I never really considered it anywhere near one of those really beautiful campuses with rolling green fields and flowers.

That's amazing - the sun was out! I also come from an arid state, so the presence of green flora is pretty overwhelming.

Yeah, everyone so far seems to be pretty cool, and thanks for the compliment.

Do you know anything about a AMC crew team?

Oh I know that there is one. I've seen pictures of the team on the hallway walls at AMC. Crew can get you jacked thats all I know...but in college its wayy to intense. I'm guessing, its toned down alot at AMC. For RPI/AMC collaboration research, you could try contacting the orthopedics department...I think they do some stuff w/ the RPI BME department...I'm just throwing out ideas, I'm not really sure of any specifics. Or you could search the AMC researchers for some w/ BME backgrounds. I would sooo love to have a newly renovated gym. It would be so convenient to drop by the gym after class for a good hour. Going to a gym in Lark seems kind of inconvenient. It's close and all, but a gym right next to the classroom, now thats hot.

I'm really impressed by some of the people in our class....a really good variety. Some impressive schools and backgrounds. If anybody's around the massachusetts area, let me know.

When's everyone moving up there? I'm moving into my place the 15th. Can't flippin wait. I'm not interested in crew (due to the 5am thing) but am down for soccer and hopefully hockey somewhere.

I'll be moving down around the 18th. Yeah a soccer club would be cool...I haven't played as much as I've wanted to.

Well i'm down for soccer. I want to do some kind of sport during school. It's good for the mind.

I'll be up there on the 19th ... wanna get my stuff in order 🙂 ... i'm really excited. i'm interested in crew but if its as intense as college crew or if its really at 5am ... i may have to pass and try something else (i.e. volleyball's more of my thing).

I agree - I didn't grow up on the east coast, so I don't know how intense some sports are there (e.g. football in TX). I just want a diversion and a way to be more active, not a cult. I'll have to play it by ear.

Having a gym in the building would be great.

drdoctor - I talked to the RPI BME department and they set me up with Dr. DePaola. I haven't talked to the ortho dept yet, but I have some names of people I want to talk to. There's all the time in the world for that stuff, so we'll see what develops.

Yeah def, you got time.

I was actually thinking about the MDDR program myself. I did developmental neurobiology research, and wasn't to sure what our options would be. But another aspect would be time, since I don't know how much time I would be able to invest on research as well as obtaining a passing grade.

Hey,

Before my statement about crew spirals out of control, 5 AM is one possibility. Sometimes, teams will row in the early evening. Basically, they try and find times when the water is absolutely still, so mornings just after sunrise tend to be the best.

As for soccer, check out this Yahoo group for pick-up games at SUNY:

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/sunyfootball/

I plan on playing when I move up to Albany permanently on th 19th, at least for a while until the school clubs start. I was also looking for a competitive outdoor league, but it doesn't seem like there are any in the Albany area; if anyone comes across one, let me know. During the winter, I'm looking to play at the Half Moon indoor facility with a team, so let me know you're interested.

Take care.

Congrats, man. You switched things around fast (SMP -> AMC). What are you going to do until school starts?

In other news, my last day of work is tomorrow!

Hey all-
Just accepted off of the waiting list on July 25th, and I couldn't be more excited to be joining all of you on August 23rd. I've been really busy, but I will post back in a little while. Anyone have any open rooms in apartments? I'm desperate to find housing now, while quiting my job and trying to figure out how to move across the country in a few days. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!
