So, I'm in NYC for another interview for the week, and I had called AECOM to let them know I would be in the city on certain dates about 10 days ago and they called me today to say they would like to interview me and can do it on friday.

I have no time to prepare for this interview so I hopefully can wing it. However, I would appreciate if anyone had any good info on Albert Einstein, or has anyone interviewed yet that could PM me and help me out a little?

Thanks

there is not very much preparation you should need to do other than reviewing your amcas submission and secondary. More often then not, you will not really be quizzed on various topics in healthcare. The trend nowadays seems to be just getting to know yo as a person as the main priority.

wear a yamaka 👍

Well I dont know about a "yamaka" but what you should wear is a yarmulke.

The AE interview is semi-blind, as in you give the interviewer a folder with your AMCAS info in it. Some interviewers take some time to read your file, and others just start the interview. The interview is usually pretty conversational and low pressure, at least from what I've seen and heard.

are you challenging me to a Jew off???

as long as its behind us by friday night.

If you can squeeze in the words mitzvah and matzahball during your interview, then they cant not accept you

Jews??? In medicine???

psshh we didnt even get our own "unite!" or "shout out" thread 🙁

yeah, if I get a interview there, my discussion is going to focus on the white jewish thing and my life changing trips to Israel lol

so i take it youve been struggling with those diversity essays also?

Is it good to be jewish when interviewing at AECOM? I'm indian, and I had only one jewish friend, that was back in high school. He was cool though, he told me he would talk to his rabbi every week and he had a bar mitzvah when he was 13.

LOL i would like to pinch your cheeks right now

i doubt it makes a difference (it might actually help. I'm a Jew and I love Indians. Ill put in a good word at our weekly meetings). One perk of the school however, is that you get off from class for the jewish holidays.

NJDIF, I take it your a westchester or long island boy? Diversity essays are easy. White jews are rare these days. Check out GW's new class. Not too many. I'm going for the, bring back the old days with my essays, we work hard and were born to be doctors

o, your from NJ. interesting. I took DIF to mean die in a fire, I guess I was wrong

Haha jersey actually. Long Island gives me the heebie jeebies.

In all seriousness, I actually included a yeshiva education (then going to Rutgers) in a few diversity essays.

edit: sorry to pittnative for hijacking the thread

interesting route. I guess Yeshiva is better than saying your a reformed jew from Upper Saddle River

yeah, sorry about that, I'll end it here, we can joke and laugh the messages if you want

nope, orthodox yeshiva and then the most diverse campus on the east coast. it was a really great experience actually.

and who knows? if stony brooke and NYMC work out I may just be a Long Island/Westchester boy!

AECOM says they don't discriminate based on religion. However, if you go in and totally bash Judaism, you're probably not going to fit in too well, so they'll probably reject you.

MSSM on the other hand, makes no promise that they don't discriminate based on religion.

i'm pretty sure if you bash judaism ANYWHERE, you are guaranteed to see a rejection.

Do you think your phone call telling them that you were going to be in town sped things up or that the interview offer was coming anyway?

i am trying this with mount sinai and nada...so i am just going to keep my fingers and toes crossed

Try being an observant Jewish mother of three trying to get into medical school - obviously a nontraditional route. My husband plans to stay at home with the kids when I start, and learn in kollel those years.

3.99 GPA in Biochem, 32< MCAT.

I can see my 'diversity' going either way to the Adcoms. I hope AE gives me a chance....

Damn you NJDIF for turning this into a Jewish thread. Now I feel obligated to post.

Thats pretty intense TopDoc, I would think that you have an extreme edge, especially with einstein with those numbers and the nontraditional route. Though you're bound to get the tough questions about how you plan on balancing the med school load and the observant family life. Of course I only have other feedback to base that assumption off of, and not my own experience.

So my response to that is,

Firstly, I should be compared to observant men more than women in medical school since I am lucky enough to have a husband who does all the cooking, laundry and child care while I study (he has been doing it through my undergrad so I already know that he is capable of doing it through medical school).

Secondly, As far as anyone handling the load with the observant lifestyle, I have had to do it all through undergrad. I live in a city where the observant population is less than 60 families. I am the only Jew (not even observant, but literally the only Jew) in the science program at my school. I have had to do my work and handle all the yomim tovim and maintain my GPA, and I always managed to do this without pissing anyone off. I would email my teachers at the beginning of every semester letting them know the days I would miss and making arrangements to get work done AHEAD of time so that I wouldn't fall behind. I am a pro at this already and I have no doubt I will be able to do this through medical school. Especially if I attend a school that podcasts their lectures or has a note service available to all students.

So, is that a convincing argument or do you think I need more explanation for Adcoms?

I just want to add that I was also able to maintain my GPA while producing and nurturing three children - something I don't plan to be juggling while in medical school, so while the work will be much tougher, I won't be pregnant/nursing while doing it.

That sounds pretty legit. I think it would be hard for an adcom to respond negatively or bust balls with regards to that response. Personally I've encountered issues in the past with regards to my level of observance superceding the 'mere' fact that I am Jewish.

Most schools, I believe do have some sort of service (podcasting/transcripts etc.). Even though some religiously observant individuals that I've spoken to (especially this year), have had a difficult time keeping up in med school, even with the podcasts, they all tell me that they are able to manage.

But of course nobody said it would be easy.
