I'm having some trouble understanding aldol and aldol condensation reactions. This is how I understand them:
Aldol Reaction:
1) an aldehyde or ketone reacts with a strong base, resulting in the formation of an elonate.
2) the elonate can act as a nucelophile, and attack another aldehyde or ketone, resutling in an aldol. this process is called an alodol reaction.
Aldol Condensation Reaction:
1) when heated, an aldol loses H2O, and becomes an unsaturated alpha-beta aldehyde. This process is called aldol condensation.
Is this correct?
