I am an "other" hispanic (South American) applying this year and was wondering whether schools consider all URMs equally. For example, would a
mexican american,
puerto rican,
african-american, or
other hispanic (for those schools who consider them a URM)

have the chance of getting in or do schools give preference to one type of minority over the other?

No clue, but as long as you speak fluent Spanish I think you're in good shape.

In my opinion South America hispanics are not as disadvantaged as the mexican americans. Most South America hispanics had to be relatively well-off to be able to make it to America.

You should probably contact the schools that you are interested in applying to and ask them if there is any difference.

Quick answer: there is no difference.

Just have good numbers and apply smart.

I am pretty sure than when I applied (entering class of 2004) *there* was a difference btw Mexican-American versus "other" Hispanic.

Hmm... that's right around the time the AAMC definition of URM changed. Maybe there is no difference now?

It seems (at the bottom of your link) that the AAMC is still committed in increasing numbers to those *four* historically underrrepresented groups...but not sure what the stance is NOW regarding whom is URM or not. There is a pdf file that is imbedded there in that page...maybe someone can shed light into this?
