the "don't call us we'll call u" SUNY. I'm post-interview hold, which I've learned from SDN, is their waitlist which will be prioritized in the spring sometime. They don't even explain it in their letter and, of course, tell u not to call them.

Downstate sucks anus.

I know that if some schools feel you are weak in a particular area they offer a summer med course that if you do well can get you an acceptance that fall.
Has anyone heard about a program like this at Downstate?

i don't know about that program, but if it exists and they say you will be accepted upon its completion then it's probably a good idea.
So the terms of the program are simply that you do well in the program and you get into their med school class??

they don't offer one at downstate. Downstate sucks most people who want to go there go there cause its close to home or its cheap. Price is a huge factor no one wants to be hundreds of grands in debt so it plays a big factor when people apply. which may be why its tough to get in. uclakid you got in somewhere already be proud and happy downstate will get back to you.

You are exactly right, I only want to go there because I already live in park slope and it is cheap. People have told me about programs you can do if you are ranked high on a waitlist, but they are maybe unsure of you because your mcat wasn't very good. You can take histology or something during the summer and unless you are a total screw up, 99% of the people will be admitted and you won't have to take histology or whatever in med school. They just want to make sure you can handle med school level classes.

Yea, what is up with Downstate this year?!? I've heard of several people with solid/average stats, who are NY residents, getting rejected pre-interview. I have yet to hear anything; the couple of times I've called, they have been completely rude. I'll just keep hitting re-fresh and keep my fingers crossed!

Yeah, what's up indeed? I think I have solid stats - received interviews at Upstate and Buffalo - but Downstate's not giving me ANY love. I emailed them a week ago, and they were pretty much dismissive and RUDE. OVER EMAIL. Whatever. They can kiss it.

yeah, they have some serious attitude problems.
their letters/e-mails are always vague (and definitely rude).

wow! what hostility there is for Downstate on this thread...oh well...

I received an interview invite from them last Friday for January  So far, all of their correspondence with me has been overwhelmingly professional and nice. I have nothing to complain about

I wish all the best for those of you who are still waiting :)

Hmm, i spoke to schedule an interview and the lady was actually extremely nice and let me call back several times while i juggled other interview dates. I actually have found that all the people who handle this work at every med school are extremely polite.

They're all nice down there, but the tone/posture taken in their letters is the worst. "You're on hold, don't call us".

NYC's a busy place, especially the Downstate area, and there's no time for the niceities of it all. If you want that, go somewhere else.

LOL.

i'm born and raised in NYC. I know what you mean, but this is the admissions office, not the corner bodega cashier. I agree that people tend to get carried away with "everyone was so nice" and warm fuzzies in evaluating a schools.

From a PR perspective, I just think they could come across much better than they are. We're talking about a form letter, how about explaining what "hold" means, reassuring us about the process going forward, quite simple and logical things that go far imo. Particularly given that their incoming class will be largely coming from the current "hold" (which for Downstate, precedes classification for HP waitlist and waitlist as I understand it).

And I am going some place else and can't wait to give them a piece of my mind if/when they call with acceptance.

I agree. It seems like a different type of brusqueness from them than the type you may come across on a street corner. There are just a few social graces that they could have when it comes to the admissions process, that could make people's lives easier. The application process is sometimes unnecessarily rough on students these days...

Oh no you didnt talk about the bodega! J/k :p

Has anyone recently interviewed at Downstate? If so, please let me know! :D

actually I'm waiting for a decision on my app from them. Got a letter on monday saying my app went to committee so a decision should be coming soon right? Anyone know how long it takes from app going to committee to receiving a response it would be helpful... Thanks

does anyone know how downstate gives out acceptances/rejections? thanks.

From what I heat they send you a letter once they have made a decision on your application.

I was complete at the end of November and received an email invite for an interview on December 21st. I interviewed there on January 11th and now await a decision. I believe they mail their decisions. Any others out there know how long between interview and decision for Downstate?

Hi All, a friend of mine went on an interview (last Thursday), and she stated to me that her interviewer informed her that Downstate's incoming class is already full  He also mentioned to her that he was interviewing her for a 'waitlist' position. I personally don't think that my friend is being honest (I have my reasons  ). Nevertheless, I'd like to verify whether or not any of this is true. Would an interviewer inform an applicant of whether or not the class is full during her interivew? If the class is full, why is Downstate still interviewing?

Has anyone who's interviewed there within the past two weeks heard anything similar to this?

Thanks!

AAR239,

Oh, I have an interview coming up. (That's my reason for asking the previous question :p )

I am confused...

so the fact that one receives a letter about the application getting a final review in the committee two days after the interview does or does not mean one's on-hold or on the waitlist?

I am pretty sure it means that your app is completely complete and had gone to the committee to determine if you are going to be accepted, rejected or wait-listed. So only time will tell. I find myself running out to my mailbox every-morning to check and still no word.

I interviewed on Dec. 1 and I still haven't heard any word besides the "don't call us, we'll call you" letter I received over Christmas.

I interviewed in early dec and I just got my acceptance letter yesterday. :D

I received the commitee letter two weeks from my interview, and received my acceptance letter four weeks after the committee letter. :D

That sucks for me... I got my comittee letter the last week of December and Now I'm still waiting.... three weeks later.

downstate sent me a letter asking for a copy of my fall grades. do you think they're interested in me?

i'm glad i got straight A's :D

AHHH I got the same thing but I got an A B and B- but they also know I was working like 30ish hours a week, so I hope that will help me out a lil :\ Lets see if tomorrow brings good fortune

So now it's been over a month since my app went to committee for their final determination if I get a seat. My interview was a month and a half ago... I'm sitting here on the edge of my seat... do I call them or do I sit on my hands and wait some more?
