all in black for interview?

The general consensus is that solid black is too formal. Those who have only black suits will disagree.

Regardless, a black jacket and gray pants will look too pieced together. Go for a solid color -- either black or gray, but not both.
 
I think I'm going for all grey or gray if you will.
 
Everyone was in black for my last two interviews. Black, grey, brown, as long as it's a suit it does not matter.

go for the same colored jacket and pants (can be black, grey, tan, navy, pin-striped, etc). the color of your button-down shirt underneath doesn't have to be white, but should be a somber color (soft blues, greens, and purples... not so much neon orange or highlighter yellow). ties are a must for guys too. hopefully this is self explanatory, but try to go with a solid or stripe and not your favorite Scooby-Doo tie. stripes don't go too well when your suit or shirt is textured/plaid/striped either. generally, only one piece (jacket/pants = one piece) should be designed, meaning not a plain solid throughout.
 
Go with something outlandish... tie die suit or a duct tape suit. It'll really set you apart from the rest.
 
If you're buying your first suit, that brand name tag on the outside sleeve is supposed to be removed. Obvious to most, but some poor guy at one of my interviews didn't know that.
 
black is fine. at my last interview, the large majority of the interviewees wore black.

yeah, it will set you apart from the 'accepted' and 'rejected'.... you will be in the second group hahaha.
 
How about khakis and a sport coat??
 
green jacket, gold jacket... who gives a ****.
 
Black and black is classic - can't go wrong.
Any neutral color dark color is fine.
 
I remember I was in the Health Professions Division when a set of interviewee's came through, all but one guy was wearing black, the one guy was wearing grey. Needless to say he really stood out, he got complemented by many people. Sometimes different isn't always a bad thing.

I agree. Solid black is too formal sometimes, and the general air of the suit is too rigid and somber. I think another suit color, like gray or navy, that is also solid and well-pressed can make a better impression.
 
Go with what you have already if you have one (assuming not many people have multiple suits). If you don't own a suit yet, then non-black suit is something to consider it seems.
 
I have been to 4 interviews so far, and at each one just about every guy (myself included) except for 1 or 2 was wearing a black suit. Black is fine.

I have a black suit w/ a dark purple shirt... now I'm thinking of getting a sky blue shirt to offset the darkness. SDN makes me think too much.
 
mines black w/pinstripes. I guess i'll were a light blue shirt under it.
 
My interview yesterday looked like a funeral march 😛😛 definately lots of black!
 
how about for girls????
i was thinking about wearing a black pencil skirt...would that be appropiate or tooo much???

and what do you bring to an interview???
 
Black is for funerals and waiters. Anyone with any business background will tell you, charcoal and navy are the standards. Black just never really looks that good. Then again, you will be interviewed by dentists, so it probably doesn't matter. 😉

Yeah I agree with everything except that 'black never really looks that good'. So far at my three interviews I hadn't notice anyone in black.
 
I wore brown (I'm a girl) and got compliments from fellow interviewees, dental students, and faculty for wearing something other than black.

as long as the skirt isn't shorter than *just* above the knee, you're ok. just follow it up with a nice blazer.

definitely bring pens and something to write on. i got one of those leather portfolio things from my school, and some other people had them too. it makes me feel kind of pretentious, so i don't think it's 100% necessary. it's good to have a folder to hold things like your note pad and stuff to help you get to the campus, though. you'll probably also be getting a folder of materials at some point in the day.
 
personally I'm a little apathetic about the whole thing. As long as you wear something 'nice'.

I wore a dark red button up with matching tie and black slacks. I didn't have a jacket, but hey... it was Florida. Every other guy there looked exactly the same (black suit, white shirt), so I was different.

*if I can float my own boat* I'd say I stood out nicely

It will be a funeral for the aspirations of some.
 
I thing it has a LOT to do with the school you're going to and the general attitude there. Some campuses I've walked onto had the definite air of all black suit, PERFECT hair, just 100% formal. Other places were much more relaxed and at these schools, I think it actually hurts you to look too formal. Schools are looking for the right match (in addition to the best scores). I definitely wouldn't go to Columbia and Arizona in the same suit. I do strongly believe that your jacket and pants/skirt should be the same color though. Otherwise it looks more like a sport jacket set than a business suit.

I've seen too many black suits so far, and too many of them just didn't look very good. I'm not talking just the color, I'm talking the fit and make.

Guys, I realize not all of us can afford an Armani, but you can't expect something you picked up from Kohl's or JCPenny to look very good. You really need to get yourself into a Men's Wearhouse or some other store where they have tailors on hand and other people who know how a suit is supposed to fit. They will alter the suit and remove all the tags and make sure it fits well.

A suit is an investment, so try not to be cheap. you don't need to spend a fortune to look good, but a $99 suit will look just like that.

(and yes, I know the majority of us are very poor students so we can't afford much, but if you have to ask your parents or someone to help you out, it is worth it)

Oh, and this was not directed at any particular person I may have encountered on my interviews, so please don't take it personally!

I wear the same suit over and over. It's navy blue, and looks professional. I'm not gonna lie, I look good 😉 ladies. I also have grey suit pants and a standard ralph lauren navy blue sports jacket with gold buttons. You know the one? I don't know if that's appropriate to wear, what do you guys think? I think it might come off as though I'm going to a wedding or something.
