here is an all time turn around for those who need confidence.
the guy that just tutored me for step one rocked a 247 after 2 years in the carribean..
and an 18 mcat.
its NEVER over 🙂
i bet him it was the all time spread, any takers?

To make such a bet would require proof.

That's great for your friend. But too bad he probably closed so many specialty doors on himself so early considering how much potential he had.

i just dont think thats true..
how many residencies care about mcats, truly??? i dont think there is a pile on the desk thats says, over 240 step one, under 240.. and then for those that are over lets break those up based on mcats.
in order of what matters, most would agree it goes school,(us or fmg) step one, step 2, research, publications, extracurricular, etc.. mcats dont factor in, you surely know this.

He was actually referring to the fact that your friend is at a Caribbean school because of his MCAT score.

aaaah, i understand. 🙂 the carribean monicker hurts, its true, but with solid scores it hurts much less, and with an awesome personality to boot i think this guy in particular will end up where he wants.

maybe he finally learned how to read in english..jk 😀 ...my goal is 230..need all the motivation i can get..

I also jumped 229 points from my MCAT to my Step 1, so I guess I tied the record.

Not to be a wet blanket (so what your friend did is FAHNTASTIC!!!) but I am guessing there are probably people who scored like a 35 on the MCAT and broke 265, giving them a 230 point spread at least. You can construct other examples.

i agree with that,
but i think that as far as the mcat being a barometer for future usmle success, this would be a record "turn around" as most who score 35's on mcats are expected to break 240's 250's.
but an 18 on an mcat by all rights shouldnt break a 200, or for that matter, pass. it shows some very hard work was done in his first 2 years.

You can't compare like that since 1 point on the MCAT is far more significant then 1 point on Step 1.

Regardless, going from an 18 to a 247 is probably a 1 in a million thing, especially since most 18's never get to take step 1 - so your friend deserves props.
