I'm posting for a friend and had a question regarding the competitiveness of Peds allergy/immunology as a fellowship. My friend will be starting at a reputable program in NYC and would most likely be interested in a position in one of the major NYC or Philly hospitals. Do you think that research would be needed to obtain a position or that good letters and strong clinical performance during residency would be enough?

How about with other peds specialties? Do you think any of the peds specialties really require research to obtain a position in the more competitive programs?

There are only a few Allergy programsavailble and many applicants for them.Especially in places like NY,anything to enhance an apllication would be advisable,If allergy is a serious interest then research will help as most fellowships are at academic centers. Both Peds and IM are eligibleto apply for this fellowship. Most other peds fellowships are not highly competitive and good clinocal letters froma solid program might be enough.

Yeah, I was looking online and it seemed like there a couple of places (CHOP for one) that offer a peds-specific fellowship in A/I, but most seem to be combined IM/Peds in terms of who can compete for a position.

Thanks a lot!

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston also.
