Do any of you have an allied health certificate/degree that you are using to both earn money and garner clinical experience? I am considering completing a surgical technologist cert/degr in order to do both. Any feedback from people who have researched this or actually have one or decided against one would be splendid.

I got a paramedic cert after the army and worked in an ER/Cath lab and on an oil rig while I completed my BS. All my interviews were full of questions and complements about my experiences and commitment to medicine. It may take a year or two longer but I feel I am more prepared starting this fall.

You can work as an ER tech with none of that. Some places will want an EMT-basic, which is like one semester, I think. As an ER tech at a moderately-busy trauma center, you will see everything, and learn a lot. Also, ER's are fun.

ER tech is a great opportunity and pays at least better than a sales or fast food job while your in college and it has way more satisfaction. Defending my route though I was pushing meds, intubating and defibrillating and offshore on the oil rig I was able to suture and function like a PA lite. I had a blast was never short on cash and learned a lot. My last two semesters I taught ACLS and PALS which really developed my public speaking. I know there are some Biochem majors that will outperform me academically but I really feel I am better prepared to interact with patients.

I got an emt cert so i could be an er tech.. unfortunately, jobs were extremely limited and they preferred cna to emt.. so i was never hired for that.. id say, get your cna.. it will help you more.

Sweet, I will be finishing a C.N.A. class in a few weeks. So, if that is more beneficial it seems I backed myself right into a productive situation.
