I have a quick question for all the DO's here that have performed an allopathic internship either as a categorical spot or as a prelim. medicine intern prior to their first year of anesth. residencyr. I was looking at some of the old threads and I feel I have a good grasp of this but wanted to make sure. I will be going through the allopathic match ONLY this next year. Nothing against osteopathic programs, it's just about location for me. I am not planning on working in the 5 states that require an AOA approved internship so that part is no big deal. However, before I sign up for an internship at an allopathic institution I thought I would ask a question. Are the chances good that if I were to do a preliminary year in internal medicine OR an internship built directly into an anesthesia residency (categorical spot) that my internship will be approved? I know this is dependent on the internship but I am assuming that the majority of the rotations are very similar among internships. I am not quite sure on the requirements that need to be fullfilled in order to satisfy the AOA but I am assuming that there are at least a few DO's out there that never did an osteopathic internship at all. Just thought I would get your opinion.

Resolution 42.

In a nutshell, you need to do a FP rotation for sure, and possibly peds and OB/GYN.

I looked into it for my allo EM residency, and since I already do OB and peds, the only thing for me to do is an FP rotation and possibly do some BS PPT about osteopathic medicine.

I have one open elective in my third year, and it's sure as **** not going to be FP. I have 45 other states to practice in, and none of The Five are places that I ever wanted to practice in.

If you read resolution 42 carefully you don't actually need OB or Ped. You do however need EM, FM, 6 months of ward including 2 IM no more a month in your choosen specialty (anes). I know there are a handful of programs out there that are willing to work with you to help you get AOA approved internship credit. Vandy and KY are two that come to mind. My pre-lim medicine is set up in a way to work it out as well. Ask around on the interview trail I am sure you will find a few more.
