Hello yall

I have been lurking for ages and finally decided to introduce myself. I am a non-trad on my third round of applications. I applied once senior year of undergrad. Again after teaching high school Chemistry for two years. Now I am on my third shot.

I am on here for support and advice. No one else in my family has gone through this process and any of my friends have had success from the beginning.

Right now I am trying to get some shadowing opportunities but that is proving to be very difficult since I do not have any connections which is really unfortunate in such a small state.

Nice to meet yall and any help/advice that can be given please drop it!!

Could you share your undergrad GPA and MCAT?

If you're not getting great reception from MD's in your attempts to shadow them, you could try DOs; I've heard they can be more receptive since DOs have to shadow a DO to apply. Can't speak to how accurate that is, but might be worth a shot.

Check out doctorsthatdo dot org and the "Find Your DO" tool to find DO's practicing in your area.

If you really want advice you're going to have to share some more details about your application such as GPA/MCAT/ECs. Why do you think previous cycles were unsuccessful?

Agreed. I think giving a little background would go a long way as far as getting meaningful feedback. But obviously take what everyone says on here with a grain of salt, some people just want to tear others down and others are very well-intentioned. I´m a non-trad as well and it took me 3 tries to get in so I know it can get tough but hang in there!

Thanks for the advice. It has been a struggle trying to find someone to give me a chance that can fit around my current work schedule. I can't quit because bills need to be paid and my spouse's income can't cover us both.

Cast a wide net for DO schools and you should net some IIs. You still have time for the 18-19 cycle.

I only share what I'm comfortable with so people demanding my info instantly puts me on guard. My previous cycles my MCAT scores were really crappy. Not saying my new score is exceptional but it's better than before. I probably was unsuccessful because I don't stand out. I never have. I was designed and raised to perfectly blend into the background. Sounds weird but very true. I worked hard in undergrad while dealing with personal issues and proud of my GPA because I know what I had to do to get it.

I'm seeking advice on how to market myself. I don't know how to do that.

Sorry if I sound defensive but opening up to people is difficult.

Yeah financially applying right now is not an option but I want the extra time to be spent shawdowing people or volunteering.

Fair enough. For next cycle, if you're trying to be economical, you could strategically apply to ~10 DO programs and your state school(s). You should have plenty of time to build a meaningful relationship with a physician over the course of the next 7 months before applying 19-20 cycle. A strong DO letter would definitely bolster your application.
