Alternate List vs. Waitlist

I suppose that this seems a silly question to all who know the answer, but could any of you elaborate on the difference between an alternate list vs. a waitlist? It seems to possibly be the case that one is ranked and one is not, but I am actually a little unclear about this.

I honestly don't think there is a difference, its just what a particular school calls it... Im not totally sure tho, I may be wrong...

I'm on the alternate list at Western, which, from the letter, is not ranked. they said they reevaluate each applicant as a spot becomes available.
