Moved to us at age of 15 with little to no English with my mom and bro. She had to work by herself to support 2 children but we never got assistance from goveenment. In high school I did horrible, was socially awkward because of the language barrier. I started at cc, worked extra hard to overcome the language barrier, and did well. Transferred to a university with a scholarship and doing well.

What do you think? Am I at a disadvantage educationally??

You did well in JC and university, so which part would make you "disadvantaged educationally?

I guess NOT

But I had to work extra hard than the average college students because I did NOT know any english when I moved at at the age of 15.
You mean in the roughly 3 years in high school you didn't pick up any English?

+1.

Stop making excuses. English and Spanish were both my 3rd languages at the same time and I didn't start learning them til I was 13. The thought of being a "disadvantaged" student didn't even cross my mind. What about the international applicants from abroad. Do you hear them betchin' about it?

Yeah I was just looking for some opinions. Some people told me to do so some didn't

i'm about to start university in fall and i can already see the awkward moments when i make horrible grammar mistake or mispronounced a word. oh well, life goes on 🙂

+ it was in highschool, i don't think they will care about it that much.

I came to US when I was 16. Even then I went back 1 year later and came to Canada just 3 years ago.

Never filled out the disadvantaged status section.

How about me...
came to US at age of 29...and I have a lot of problem...
but keep moving.....KEEP MOVING...

I don't think you were at a disadvantage because of the language barrier. I didn't speak English when I moved here either, but I didn't put that down.

If on the other hand, you grew up very poor, maybe that can help...idk.

I usually don't like looking for excuses on applications. I am a URM, but I don't consider myself at a disadvantage because both of my parents have Ph.D.s and are professors.

To be honest with you, I think others that have commented are being a little harsh. Most applicants, if not the majority, can only speak English and it's our only language. And being 15 trying to learn English for the first time is still hard to do... I went through 3 years of Spanish in high school and I can't hold a very decent conversation with someone because I wasn't around it enough to really pick it up. Educationally, you may be at a small disadvantage.

Just from the little info you gave it sounds like you may have been at a bigger disadvantage financially. I can relate with being poor and not getting assistance from the government even though my family was eligible. Just not how we are. A LOT of those applying to professional school come from more privileged backgrounds, or at least it seems that way. I had to struggle and pay through everything myself, I didn't get a dime from a mommy or daddy.

So, I would put it down if you think it qualifies-- I think it qualifies. It's there to serve a purpose, and it's not flagging your application with 'hey, come hear about my pity party story,' but more of letting adcoms and others know that you're resilient and have made it by really fighting for this since you didn't have it easy. Good luck :luck:
