I'm currently working on my app and now I'm on the "Disadvantaged Status" section. I'm not sure if I should select yes or no. My status as of now is good, and don't feel I'm economically/socially/educationally disadvantaged. However, I have been all my life before entering college. I was born in the US, however, I moved away and lived in a country which got into war (don't want to mention where). Ever since, my family and I have been struggling economically and have moved to different countries for a better financial status and at the same time for better education. I cam back to the US during my teens and have been under federal assistants (medicaid, food stamps, welfare, etc.). But with the years, my parents found better jobs for better financial living. So after the age of 18, I would say, my life have finally turned around for the good and have been well financially stable. My question is, should I go ahead and consider myself disadvantaged? Am I under this category? Again, I don't feel like I am anymore and I'm very thankful to how my life's been progressing.

Any help is greatly appreciate it!

You are at a major disadvantage if you are just now completing the AMCAS but that's not your question.

The AMCAS question is related to financial/social situation from birth to age 18. Did you feel that you were less prepared for college because you had fewer resources as a child? Did you attend poorly performing schools? Did you lack opportunities for after-school lessons, field trips, exposure to cultural activities (movies, live performances) that other kids take for granted? Were your neighborhood underserved with regard to access to medical providers?

It doesn't matter what your situation is now.... the question is for 0-18. I've even seen non-trads earning big salaries check the disadvantaged box for the opportunity to highlight their rags to riches story.

Thank you for your response! I know I'm at a huge disadvantage applying this late. I'm only applying to my state school. Didn't do too well on my MCAT 🙁

I would say, from age 3 to 10 I was schooled outside the US, I didn't have the same opportunities as people would have here during that age. I was living in several third world countries, so they did lack in medical providers and in education. I had terrible teachers, I remember one teacher taught us that we can add the denominators (it was that bad). Thats why my family came to the US, for better education and financial status. I did however struggle a lot when I came back to the US. My english was my seconds language, so I was put into ESL for several years and so that put me back from being in other programs. I wasn't able to take the normal english courses taught (they forced me to stay in ESL). But I performed well in college. I did well and graduated with above average gpa and have many clinical, research, organizational, and volunteer experience. I'm extremely a hard working guy because of what I've been through.

So are you saying I should go ahead and apply as disadvantaged?

Hey, don't sweat it. If this cycle you don't get in, you could always apply next year. You have to be optimistic. And as to your question, I'd definitely consider myself "disadvantaged" if I were you.

sorry! i was just amused by the way LizzyM put it; i wasn't meaning to poke fun at you 😳

Yeah I guess it was pretty amusing the way LizzyM put it 😛

Thank you all for your responses 🙂
