I need some support. I am new to this forum, so i also want to introduce myself. I recently took the plunge into trying to go into a Post Bacc program. I always wanted to go into medicine but didnt have enough confidence to do so. I have a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Law from Binghamton University, cummulative GPA 3.2, Masters in Exercise Physiology from Adelphi University, cumm GPA 3.2. I have been working a hospital now for 2 years as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist working with various populations, do stress testing, Pulmonary Function Testing, etc. I have done research on HIV patients, cadiac patients, and autonomic function studies.

I recently went to a community college and took physics I and bio I, got a B in physics and a B+ in bio. I worked my butt off for that B in physics. I think one person got an A in the entire class. Anyway. I am currently taking General Chem, still at the community college. I finally decided to enroll in Hofstra University's Post Bacc program to finish out my coursework.

How do my grades look so far, pardon my questions, I am new at this. I found this forum to be extremely helpful. I plan on, hopefully, applying to a DO school or Med school for Fall of 2006. I am 26 years old, so that leaves me to be 28 by then. Am I crazy to try for a Medical school ? Someone help.

DO schools ARE med schools. You better make sure you understand that before applying to one! 😉

Hey, if you're crazy, I'm downright insane. I'm 34 now, and I chose to defer my acceptance to Bennington Post-Bac until next Summer, so I can get my financial house in order and get some more work experience before I go. I have a BA in theatre, GPA 3.0. I have 15 years experience in business, and 1 yr experience part-time as a tech in a busy county ED.

Relax; if it's what you're meant for, it will be abundantly clear and the right people will know it.

Yup! - you are crazy alright, nuttier than a fruitcake, give up now before you waist some med-schools admission committee and your own time!!! ...j/k..

Seriously though, sounds as though you are on the right track, your grades so far shouldn't detract from your chances of getting into med school, they aren't stellar compared to some..., but then again they are better than others who will matriculate. As you will find out in the years to come your, although important #'s aren't everything when it comes to very frustrating process of applying.
You made a good choice transferring and not taking all your pre-med reqs at a community college, they are better looking to adcoms when they come from a decent 4yr. looks as though you have research & clinical experience pretty much taken care of, that's a plus for your apps /essay/ interview, as is having your masters. Are you a B /B+ student across the board? Not a horrible thing.... hell, not that bad at all, better than my undergrad GPA. But while at Hoffstra do what you can to get some A / A- 's in your remaining classes (I know easier said than done). You don't have to ace them all and it wont do much for your overall GPA , but it will help to have them in there, showing trend towards improvement is always a good thing, and each one you get will pull your BCMP GPA up a bit. If I was you I wouldn't be scared to apply to allopathic schools as well unless osteopathic is what you have your heart set on.
Just keep doing what you have been doing, try to do better but defiantly don't do worse in any of your classes, score well on the MCAT, apply early....bla..., bla...... ,bla 😴

Well, thank you all for replying. That definitely gives me a better direction. As far as knowing the difference between MD and DO school. Yes, I know the differences, and well aware that they are BOTH medical school. However, I just didnt think that allo schools would accept me with B/B+ grades. I have always been under the assumption that medical schools only taken top A students and dont bother looking at anything else. Yes, overall, I am a B/B+ student and work damn hard to get that too. But, I am determined and will do my very best to accomplish this goal.

With that being said, I am just trying to think realistically, is all! But, I am definitely going to go to this Post Bacc program (if accepted) and try to pull off the best damn grades that I can, as well as MCAT scores. Thanks for the advice guys. By the way, does anyone know if the Hofstra Post Bacc program is good? Any background information would be helpful. Unfortunately, this Post Bacc program is the closest to my house and while it is $$$, I feel that at this point, what is an extra 20K anyway! 😀

You have a masters degree AND a law degree, at age 26?
You definitely have the drive to be successful in med school. Material in med school is kind of difficult but I've heard that people usually have the most trouble just ORGANIZING the huge volume of material and figuring out just how the heck to study the RIGHT way. With your previous degrees and work experience, I'm sure you will have no problem getting use to med school culture.
Good luck.

Thanks Tahitian, I have a pre-law degree and a masters in exercise physiology. I am sure material in med school is difficult. Thanks. Appreciate the support.
