Hello, this is my first post and certainly not the last. I am a high school junior and I was wondering if I was doing enough for college and med school. I have a 97 average overall unweighted, with the weight of the honors and ap classes I believe it is proabably close to a 100. I also got a 100 in physics this 1st marking period and a 98 overall in chem last year with a 100 on the midterm and final (class average was an 89). I had a 93 in bio freshman year. In my free time I volunteer on my local ambulance corps, babysit my neighbor 5 days a week 1 hour a day, tutor a kid in math once a week for an hour, am a member of the operation smile club at my school, and I tutor in spanish at school also. I am also a self taught guitar player, not that good yet though haha. The rest of my time is spent reading a good book or just relaxing with my friends and girlfriend. Am I doing enough to get ready?

Dude, if you are 5 1/2 years away from graduating from college, you are doing WAY MORE than enough. That doesn't mean stop doing what you're doing and increase your leisure time. But do not worry AT ALL. High school GPA and extracurriculars are fairly irrelevant for med school admissions, just as MCAT and undergraduate grades are fairly irrelevant for residency positions. Your goal for the next 18 months is to get into COLLEGE. Once you're there, you can worry about amping up your ECs, getting college grades, etc.

Just so you know, what you do in high school is irrelevant for med school admission. They don't care. If your grades and extracurriculars stay the same through college, you'll be in great shape.

I believe he said he's taking AP classes, if so, those do matter. He will be reporting those grades to AMCAS.

OP: What everyone said is generally correct. Your high school grades only matter if you want to get into a prestigious undergrad university. I got into my state university with a pretty low high school gpa. high school gpa does not have any effect on getting into medical school. The only EC's you do in high school are only important if you continue to do them in college.

No, you don't report AP grades, only the credit they give you. Some (many?) schools won't accept AP credit, by the way.

True, but every school is different. If it ends up on his transcript he will have to report it. Better safe than sorry I always say.

This is one instance where sdhools' policies aren't really that variable. They either accept course credit gained by way of AP exams or they don't. That's it, as far as I'm aware. You can be safe all you like, but those AP class grades vanish forever when you start college, as do the exam scores.
