Hi all!
I'm planning to apply to med school this upcoming cycle. I've been doing research the last two years and my contract ends in July. I'm hoping that my tentative gap year plans for afterward aren't too light, and I was hoping to ask you guys.
1) finish off pre reqs. I have physics II to take and I could throw on another English class since some schools (like Columbia) seem to want two semesters. This would be about two classes, or 6 hours, a week. Any other suggested classes that might help for med school? Got A&P and microbio off the top of my head.
2) clinical volunteering. I have wanted to be involved in hospice for a while so I'll likely ask for maybe two times a week, maybe 6 hours.
3) other volunteering. I'd like to get involved in tutoring again (haven't done it since 2015), so maybe I'll tack on a Big Brothers Big Sisters weekly thing or do something similar at a local cancer institute. This would again be maybe 3 hours a week.
The rest of the time I'm looking to do secondaries and hobbies like playing music and working out (the perks of moving back home lol). This adds up to (generously) 15 hours a week.
I'm concerned because this seems like a really light schedule, especially after my current 40-50 hour a week research job. Do you guys think I should try to find something else to add on, like a part time scribe job? I don't want to give off the appearance of suddenly becoming lazy, I'm just trying to enjoy a last year of relatively light workload while beefing up the weak areas of my app.
Thanks!
P.S. My app had been research heavy the last two years and I'm really looking to boost clinical hours (I have 240+ right now of meaningful stuff but would like to continue) and continue tutoring (just something I like). MCAT and GPA are all in order
