Hello altruists,

I am a new permanent resident of USA. I have a Bachelor of Pharmacy (4 years) degree (CGPA 3.45 by WES) from India. I also have a masters in pharmaceutical science from a USA university (CGAP - 3.71). I am very much interested to become an MD.

1) Am I eligible for MCAT?
2) If I am eligible, then can I sit for MCAT on April 1st and catch fall 2016?
3) I have a family. How can I support my family during 4 year of medical study?

Thank you advance for your kind reply 🙂

Looks like you had a sweet ride via the brain drain express train from India! :pirate:

Jokes aside...
1. Yes... the only req is you intend on applying to health professions school. So, technically, my 6-yr-old cousin Scooter is eligible to take the MCAT since he's an aspiring physician already
2. Yes, you can sit for April 1st, 2016, but the fastest you can go to med school is Fall 2017. App cycle is a 1-yr deal
3.

I can only offer a small something for #3. Many schools have a Cost of Attendance that includes cost of living: food, gas, books, etc that will help with living necessities. But, for a family, some schools will offer a higher COA to help with family needs. Then, if the COA doesn't cover it all, you can apply for food stamps.

1) It is recommended that you take all the prerequisites at a US or Canadian school before taking the MCAT. This can include coursework that applied to a masters degree. Also, it's suggested that you study for at least 2 months before the test and take multiple practice tests before the real thing, to be sure you can score near your target zone.

Be aware that most med schools expect you to have 2-3 years of full-time college credit from a US/Canadian school before applying. There are some that require just one year and a rare few that require a full bachelors degree. AMCAS (the primary MD application service) does not accept foreign transcripts.

3) You take out loans, have your working spouse support you, and/or borrow money from other relatives. Alternatively, you might work as a pharmacist for enough years to save up the money ahead of time.
