Here's my shadowing experience. I have absolutely no idea what's customary on shadowing (20 hrs? 1000 hrs?) so just wanna know if this is sufficient. Personally, I feel it was some quality shadowing and feel like I know enough about doc's life

20 hrs Neurosurgeon
20 hrs Cardiologist
20 hrs Derm
60 hrs Family Practice (relative)

This is good, right? No red flags raised? And how about that 60 hrs family practice relative shadowing? I lived with the guy for 2 weeks and learned a lot, so I'm hoping that the fact we have the same last name won't be a red flag. Obviously I didn't get a LOR from him.

Now the question is do I need to shadow any more? I think I learned enough and now I'd rather just set my focus to research+volunteering but what u guys think?

You're good to go. About 50 hours is the average listed. Shadowing a relative is fine.

have you done enough shadowing? only you can answer that. do you have any lingering doubts? concerns? what specialty (ies) are you thinking about?

Why did you shadow?

Why did you shadow?

2 reasons. To make sure that my desire to become a doctor was well founded, and to be competitive for medical schools when I decide it is.

OP you need to have at least 20 hours in every specialty (including fellowships within IM and Peds)

Hey, I don't know what the hell the baseline for comparison is. With all these very motivated students pushing the boundaries of what makes someone competitive, I gotta know what I'm up against.

Thanks everyone for the answers🙂
