I'm bumbed out because I got a B on an exam instead of an A. I realize what I did wrong, its just a little depressing to put so much effort into studying only to get mediocre results.

Are you still competitive now that you're in pharm school? Does having all A's matter? Sometimes I think I'm the only one at my school that cares about getting good grades. Does it matter now that we're all "in" the program.

take a chill pill. A B on one test is not the end of the world, nor is a B in one class. You don't need a 4.0 for Rho Chi (at least at my school)

If getting a 4.0 is that important to you, then you'll need to study that much harder. The reality is that C = Degree, so unless you're going for one of those 1% jobs, balance tests with learning actually relevent material (something that's not always tested) and life.

I liken it to the NFL. In highschool lots of people play football right? Just like lots of students do well in classes. In college a smaller portion of students do well (A's) in classes just like a smaller portion play D1 football. Well you're past college and onto the NFL and less then 1% of the D1 students make it to the NFL. That's like maintaining a 4.0 is that much harder in Pharmacy school. Alas the people that make 4.0 aren't neccesarily going to head out into the world and make 6mil+/year. It's all about priorities.. 😉 I mean look at WVU he finally graduated...

I still want to get good grades. A 4.0 isn't necessary to me, but I'ld like to get some kind of academic scholarship for P2 year to help out with the loans situation.

And yeah, I definitely get the feeling that people don't care too much about their grades in pharm school.

Here is what is really important:

LEARN THE DAMN MATERIAL

Ten years from now when you are counseling a patient or consulting with a physician what's important is what you know, not what grades you achieved. Sorry Dr. X, I can't answer that because I don't really remember, but I did get an A in it back in pharmacy school...

I mean look at WVU he finally graduated...

I'll bet old Mikey didn't graduate anywhere near the top of his class, but read any of his clinical posts. The dude knows what he is talking about.

Well said. You know what, I figured this out recently after doing my 3rd rotation, currently at CVS. Which is unfortunate because in school, they stress high grades etc. But really, its what you learn and retain AFTER the exam/class that really matters. I'm in Rho Chi, dean's list and all that jazz, but a year later, I can barely remember what the mechanism of action of some of these medications I am coming across, and what the major keypoints of these medications are. Personally, I am working on it though and reviewing my therapeutics notes (they come in handy believe it or not!)

I agree, it's better to learn your stuff than care about grades. I was Rho Chi, and I feel like an idiot 95% of the time in the pharmacy, I wish I had spent more time on patient counselling, ADRs, and monitoring.

c = degree

tests very rarely test real, useful knowledge.

learn your drugs, and MOAs, and get some real world pharmacy skillzz

another variation...

all C's = PharmD

My past is filled with so many Cs, my friends called me The Admiral.

And getting Bs/Cs isn't even why I didn't graduate on time. It's because the school hates me and gleefully crucified me the first chance they got. I forgot to take a test (long story). Rather than just letting me take the test right then at the end of the semester....or even make me take a **** grade on the missed exam and calculate it towards my overall average which would make me pass the class with a low "C"....they just failed me and made me take a section of pathophys the next semester.

Meanwhile, two girls the year before me got caught cheating on a test in front of a biochem professor and the dean of the school of pharmacy, hired a lawyer, graduated on time like clockwork. They constructed a brilliant lie and walked. They should have been kicked out of school, but a lawyer saved them.

Another person in my class plagiarized a paper his final semester. Blatantly. The professor even stood in front of the class and informed us that he knew that several people shared thoughts and ideas on their papers...and what happened? Nothing. I'm talking straight up academic dishonesty. I do absolutely nothing dishonest, go in there and tell the professor that I had a lot going on in my life at the time, had to move into a new house (muh trailer!!!) the week of the test, my wife was having medical problems at the time....plus I was being honest and completely admitted that I just dropped the ball....and what happened? I got beaten with the unforgiving whackin' shoe of pretentious academics with power. I have despised academia and the school ever since. I was thinking about working at WVU Hospitals after graduation, but the idea of ever having to look at any of them ever again makes me nauseous. I don't even work in the same state anymore. I'm up here in the safe haven of Pennsylvania where they have no influence. Thank God.

Nobody gives a crap about grades, it's about how well connected you are and how well you put up a facade in front of people with more power than you. That was my problem. I'm too honest.

While I haven't read his papers I'd wager that too, but I had to do SOMETHING to get him to post here. 😉

Plus really nothing breaks up post-test-emo better then a good BCS rant.

@WVU, We had a similar problem where we had tests online the teacher made a big deal of it and not a damn thing happen. We had a few girls from one of the fraternities meet in the head, it was witnessed by the proctor and overheard by various students brought to the Dean and yet they are still in school. Schools generally suck for doing the right thing because that costs money and the more students still in a class the more revenue the school is generating.

He got the shotgun, we got the drugs?
