I got my first Chem and bio tests back and I got a 76 and 73 respectively (got a 100 on physics though lol). I definitely have no excuses except to really study for the next tests; but has anyone here done bad on tests and still end up with an A or at least A- in the course? I figure if I work harder I can still definitely get at least an A- but im curious to see if anyone here has gotten an A with poor test scores (we have 3 regular exams + a final),

Yep. Depends how the tests are weighted, and if the class is curved. But definitely possible.

You're fine. Just take it as a learning experience and change what you have to change to do better next time. You would be amazed how many people failed the first Bio and Anatomy tests in Med School. Also if you dont get an A its not the end of the world. Just remember the average GPA for matriculating med students isn't a 4.0. B's happen, as does the occasional C if you had a little too much fun the weekend before your first O-Chem test... Whoops

very possible, try as hard as you can to remember the exact questions your professor gave you. Go back and look at your notes/class notes and analyze them to understand what sort of questions your professor will pull for the exam.

Does he pull them from the book/homework?
Are the same exact questions online anywhere?
Has anyone uploaded his future test to studyblue?

Create a mental algorithm to understand what the future test will be like based upon that exact class, this will give you a better idea of how to study. (at least this is what I do)

the tests aren't curved because these are intro level classes.

Yes, I think my biggest failure was preparation. I haven't been going over the notes and classwork this month and didn't start studying until last week, so I didn't remember much of the material I read over the last few days. But I am changing that now.

Thank you for the encouragement!

I completely bombed a project for physiology. I think I forgot to answer a couple of key questions on the assignment (it was a rough week). It was weighted as much as an exam. That was the only (science) class I actually had to make an A on the final in order to get an A in the class. But I managed it.

got a 76 on my first chem exam due to anxiety then I got a 96 and 100 on the next two tests for an a in the class. took stepping back and reflecting on my study habits and approach. Also if you can not let anxiety take over that's the biggest factor. you can do it!

Very nice.

You're definitely under-reacting.

But yes, I have scored poorly on tests and still came out with an A in a few courses.

This happens to me all the time in undergrad... I would get a 70ish grade on the first exam and then after that I work my butt off cause I know I have to bring it up. Definitely served as motivation haha lol but many times I was able to pull an A.

But seriously, for the 76 grade do the math, If you are willing to work really hard and assuming this is 3 exams and a final each exam worth 25% then if you can get a 95 on the next three tests you would be sitting on an A-. Granted you'll have to work hard but its definitely not out of reach. If you have extra assignments beside the regular 4 exams then you're in even better shape because you'll have other things to pull the grade up.

Got a 52 on my first Chem test. A in the class. He dropped lowest test though so I was fortunate.

It's definitely possible to come back from it. I had a rough start my first semester in college, with several no-so-great test and essay grades. I quickly learned what level of work was required for my success, and I pulled off a 4.0 that semester.

Thanks, and I also realize even if I don't quite bounce back and end up getting a 3.6-3.8, I can still end first year with a solid 3.8+ if i got a 4.0 or 3.9+ next semester.
