I usually have a 28-day cycle, but this month I am about a week late. I have taken 3 "first response" pregnancy tests and they all came out negative. The last time I had sex was 7 days ago, the day I was supposed to have my period. My question is, how long do i have to wait after conception before an accurate pregnancy test can be performed? Is there a chance that I got pregnant the last time i had sex (7 days ago) and my hormones are still too low to be detected?
Again, had sex 7 days ago, i am 7 days late and tested negative today (7 days after my scheduled bleeding.)

Now I'm not a doctor, but if your cycle is regular, you shouldn't get pregnant on the day you're about to start your period. The egg has already gotten out of the zone, so to speak. If you're irregular, heck anything can happen.

You should read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. You can take it out of the library but it's a handy book to have just for reference sake.

The earliest I have heard of positive on a home pregnancy test is 8 days past ovulation. By 18 days past ovulation (if you get that far), you will most definitely get a positive if you are pregnant.

Were you stressed out or sick this cycle? You more than likely just ovulated late. If you ovulated late, then your period would be late, but you wouldn't necessarily be pregnant. Basically you need to have unprotected sex before or during ovulation in order to get pregnant. If you have a standard 28 day cycle, you probably ovulate somewhere btwn days 14-16 give or take... so if you think you could be pregnant, it would be from sex around that time, not from 7 days ago.

BTW, not all pregnancy tests are the same. To get a really early positive you need one that is very sensitive.

Agree with previous poster.
The earliest to test with the really early tests is 8-10 days after ovulation/conception. (the box says 5 days before missed period I think).

Normally you do ovulate 14 days before your next period...so if you were stressed, sick, changed your diet, exercise, or sleep habits, etc (like tlew said) you may have ovulated late...which would delay your period. So if you did have sex 7 days ago and your ovulation was delayed you may be pg...

I've also read though that you can ovulate anytime - even twice a cycle- it's rare. They always tell young girls there is always a chance to get pg when you have sex (unprotected...) because you can ovulate anytime.

Double ovulation would have to occur within 24 hours of each other. Otherwise you would have sets of twins unequally gestated (is that even a word?). This is why people who use FAM as their birth control must wait at least 72 hours past ovulation before having unprotected sex.

Yep, that's what we do. 🙂 By mentioning the double ovulation, I didn't mean they were weeks apart- just that it's not always as cut and dry as day 14 of your cycle.

And... Taking Control of your Fertility is an excellent book for all women to read! There is charting software available on her website (I think it's Toni's- at least it's affiliated w/ her book) www.ovusoft.com - you have to pay though after a short trial.
or you can go to www.fertilityfriend.com - they have free charting- not as many features as Ovusoft or the paid version of Fertility Friend, but the free one is fine too.

BTW, no reason to take 3 pregnancy tests, at least on the same day. They are very sensitive. Also, no need to go to the Emergency Room to get one. Most use the same one that the drug store has.

I work in a reproductive health clinic, we advise women that urine hCG pregnancy tests are effective 10-14 days after conception. Our tests are similiar to the highly sensitive tests available over the counter such as EPT. So, as others have already said, it is possible that you are pregnant and that it is too soon (e.g., there are insufficient amounts of hCG present in your urine) to be detected by a test, if your last intercourse was 7 days ago. Wait another week (which, judging from the date of your initial post, has almost passed) and take another test, preferably with your first void of the day. There are serum hCG tests which you could request from an OB/GYN that can detect pregancy as soon as a week after conception, but this would be considerably more expensive than a urine test and probably not worth the extra cost if you can wait a few days.

So what is the verdict -
