i was surprised when i saw some people on this forum saying that your are late in the application cycle if u apply now....i thought that if you were to submit your application say today, you would still be somewhat early, not super early like some folks, but i would think that you would be somewhat early. please correct me if i am wrong because i thought i was still early than the majority of the applicant when i submitted my application yesterday to aadas. thanks

You're fine. It's important to get your stuff in early, but anyone suggesting that you're late in the application cycle applying now is just plain silly.

The sooner you submit your application the better off you are. While you are not 'super' late, you are not really early either. There are a few thousand applicants each year, and I have read estimates that this year there will be at least 8,000, and AADSAS can only process so many applications at one time. I sent my application in on June 1 and it took them a little over a month to mail it out to the schools, and my remaining LOR, which have also been sent in quite some time ago, have finally been sent out as well. The more applications AADSAS receives the longer it will take them to get your application out the door - it is not a simple 'click' and preston, the next day the schools have your information. Speaking of schools, they too will be swamped with applications. The closer your application is to the start of the line, the better. In addition, some schools are already sending out secondary applications and interview invitations, and then it won't be long until they start making acceptance decisions. Just because acceptance letters are mailed out on December 1st doesn't necessarily mean that the school made their decision on who's in or out on December 1st. Probably those decisions were made right after some of those early interviews. My intention in posting this is to help you understand the importance of submitting your application, and anyone reading this thread that has not already done so, as soon as possible.

I submitted my AADSAS a week before Christmas, only applied to one school, and didn't interview till the end of February. Earlier is better, but don't believe the horror stories you'll find here in abundance. Good luck!

That's fantastic, though I am afraid you are the exception and not the rule. Applying late is a gorilla that I wouldn't dance with. Oh, by the way Aphistis, congratulations on your engagement! 🙂

That's probably the first thing I've ever seen you write that I disagree with.

You applied EXTREMELY late, and applied to ONE school (and was it your state school?). For 99% of applicants that is a recipe for disaster.

And I'll side with the other posters who say that applying now is fine--it isn't early but it isn't late.

And while we're on the subject, more and more these days the terms "applying early" or "applying late", etc. should be applied to the number of applications submitted at the time the candidate submits, NOT the month or date.

Afterall, if typically 1,000 people apply in June, but one year 3,000 people apply in June, than the July applicant would find themselves with 3,000 applications in front of theirs as opposed to the more traditional 1,000.

Some day I don't doubt that is how the dental admissions game will play out. All signs are pointing towards that.

Fair enough, Gavin. To answer your question, yes, IUSD is my state school. To be fair, I do certainly agree that waiting unnecessarily to submit an AADSAS is going to steadily erode one's chances of successful admission. However, to obsess over applying in July instead of June smacks of the paranoia that characterizes other aspects of the application process (GPA & DAT neuroses leap immediately to mind). I know you sat in on admissions interviews too, Gavin, so you know what I'm talking about when I mention the countless intangibles that factor into any individual admission decision.

In the end, my opinion on application dates is the same as for every other aspect of applying: do the best you can, but you gain nothing by sweating over things you either can't control or have already done.

I sent off my incomplete application about this time last year. I took the DAT around the middle of October. I got interviews in November, and acceptances in December. So don't sweat it.

Maybe an ulcer.

Aren't we really just talking about a numbers game and it's really up to the individual on how much they are willing to risk. Chances decreases as the season progresses but do not necessarily reach 0. I read people on here go back and forth, really agnozing about these things. It just seems like it is such an individual decision it is really hard to give sweeping advice either way. Thats my two cent(maybe all it's worth)
