Am I the only one that doesn't feel comfortable with St. James University?

I clicked on the website and browsed through it and I'm not getting a good vibe. Why do I feel that if I ever went there, I don't think I would be practicing in the US?

Please tell me it's not just me.

You probably wouldn't, the big 4 schools have placement rates at or under 50%. I'd only assume that an unknown carib medical school is going to probably be screwing over 90% of its students.

It is just you.

The rest of us are concerned by all carribean schools.

If it's good enough for Dr. Nick, it's good enough for me

I, personally, find the classrooms quite impressive. Look, they might even have air conditioning...

That dude kind of has his legs spread wide open. They have flat screen monitors.

 at that gunner sitting in the front row dressed up like he's a medical representative. Probably preparing for his future career amirite?

He forgot his white lab coat.

...and stethoscope around his neck. 😀

Frazier, that is the exact picture that made me feel uncomfortable.

I also found the picture of the rainbow to be disturbing.

I mean, I want to go to medical school bad but I know you have to draw the line somewhere. I couldn't find enough information on the site regarding residency placement in the northeast.

I know Cali is NG so I'm guessing New York might be the same.

Maybe with time, the school will gain a reputation but as for right now, I'm not that desperate.

😕

Med representatives are just salesmen who go to doctor's offices and give drug samples a spiel on the drug. Also bring food for the office staff 👍

A real gunner would be pretending that he is a doctor already.

I like the drug reps too. I've got a whole bunch of viagra pens. One even has a phallus. 😀

I also have a Paxil clock (used to work in pysch).

If I get into med school, I'll give you a phallus pen! 🙂

😀 I didn't know it was possible to be more motivated to get into med school!

Were you planning on Caribbean, drdan?

I believe in having a plan A, a plan B, and also a plan C.

St. Georges and Ross would be in the plan B

and schools like St. James would be relegated to plan C.

There's just a part of me that can't see someone coming from a school that doesn't even require the MCAT treating patients here in the US. Their website just did not attract me.

we need to be careful on here about how we sling these numbers around... I'm prepared to say that AUC, Ross and Saba are in the 50-60% range, and that SGU might well get into the 60s in a good year.

But yeah, St. James is a horrible bet.

Dr. Dan, please go DO over B & C.

Hi Frazier,

I'm a step ahead of you.

DO is in plan A.

Being that competition is the way it is and this is something I really want, I have to have a backup plan. St. James sounded like a nice backup but after looking at the website I said that I would not want to be treated by some doc that graduated from here.

Pathology resident I worked with went to St. James, he didn't like it there at all.

I get a weird vibe from Caribbean schools in general...not just St. James.

I would agree with this statement. Unfortunately, said reputation will likely be for not placing students into U.S. residency. Come to think of it, that seems like it's the direction all Carib schools are headed. If DO doesn't work out for the OP, perhaps plan B should be PA and plan C a BSN and then onto NP. Those would both be much better options than the Carib, especially with today's healthcare climate.

So, you're saying he made it
He did, but he had a phd already before going down there and was very familiar with doctors at the school he is currently a resident at.

EDIT: In other news, check that out-of-control gunna-mon in the front row by himself (granted there is no other available seating 😉 ).

What's with the guy in the green shirt sitting sideways and the woman in the back of the classroom standing?

This place seems a little too sketch.

There's a reason he didn't get into a US MD; maybe the whole non-conformist thing was part of it
and the woman in the back of the classroom standing?
Not enough space...this IS the Caribbean after all...

Note the woman sitting next to him in just a plain chair, doesn't even have a desk on it.

Don't ever go Caribbean. You can get in eventually if you're determined enough, just ask Noshie. 🙂

Just looked through some of their other picture ( http://anguilla.sjsm.org/images/gallery_images/DSCN0199.JPG for huge). Really ghetto setup. This is from Anguilla campus, slogan: "Our newest campus. Modern facilities. Luxury Amenities."

Also, apparently, you can get to sit behind the speaker? That's really awkward.

Guy on the right is plugged into the matrix though, so they have pretty good technology at least.

Maybe the woman in the back is standing up because she's guarding the door. I mean, those white-sand beaches are really tempting.

giant image.

 at that girl yawning in the front row

and you know the indian guy sitting next to her is creeping on hot chicks he went to UG with on facebook

this setup and the students make it seriously looks like a 12th grade remedial math course....not a medical school.

The white guy (with the glasses) right behind the computer monitor looks like he should be smart. WHAT GIVES?!

I'm more astounded that they're using what appear to be e-Machines.

What is this, 2001?

nah he looks like a d-bag

the only legitimately smart looking person is the asian guy sitting behind the indian guy in the red shirt. He gives me the feeling he could get a 240+ on step 1

The other guy with glasses in the front row isn't wearing sandals. You don't wear socks on the beach!

Guys, wait. There's an Asian in that last picture. This can't be right...

You're right....Asians are required to commit seppuku if they don't get into a top 20 MD program.

Clearly, this is someone who has forsaken his family and his culture.

Caribbean medical school?!??! Why you no go to Arabian medical school??

I'm digging the clear blue water bottles lots of them have, too. One can only assume it was a "free with purchase" gift on their tuition.

And HP computers *shudder*
