Hi. I'm in sort of an unusual predicament. I am a first year in college, but due to the number of hours from dual enrollment and AP credit, I am currently a junior. I plan on taking three years to get my undergrad so I have time to minor/double major maybe. I just started looking into the field of dentistry (I was originally pre-vet). I am now very interested in dental school, but I would need to apply in June of 2014. I don't have any shadowing hours or dental experience. Is it too late for me to get enough to be competitive? And will dental schools look down on me only going for three years? Any advice or input would be great!

P.S. I live in GA so I'm hoping to apply to GHSU. If anyone could tell me more about it or how difficult it is to get in that would be great. Thanks! 🙂

Doing one or two majors in 3 years will not be looked on as bad (will be looked on favorably). You would only need to be worried if you weren't going to get a degree.

Shadow as soon as possible. Builds your application and allows you to evaluate your suitability for the field. General rule of thumb: Hit a minimum of 40 hrs at a general dentist (most important).
This will be good at most schools (Check with the school for their specifics). Hit a minimum of 100 hrs shadowing with General dental+speciality hrs combined. I am in school with people who have 1000s hrs(ridiculous) to 80 hrs. There comes a point when the amount of hours can't matter that much. FYI I had a 100 total hours (40 Gen Dent) when I applied.

Can't help you with the specifics of Georgia, sorry.

There are four of us 3 years in my class, with and without degrees. Good luck to you, its a hell of a path. Feel free to message me if you need to know anything else.

Go Blue.

Just be careful when applying to schools who don't take ap credit or have restrictions if you have ap's in pre-reqs

Thanks for all the help and input! I really appreciate it!
