It was narrowly voted this way, reflecting political divide of the nation. Whatever the biases of the leadership, this 53-47 divide pretty much sums up where we are as a nation.

The AMA student section is often the tail wagging the dog, e.g. the resolution to end Step 2 CS, because the students are substantially more motivated and organized on a number of issues. I wouldn't be surprised if they played a role here. At AMA regional conference a few years back, one of the guys in student leadership said he thought physician pay cuts were inevitable (and even desirable for cost containment).

If the AMA endorses universal Medicare, they will just be twisting the knife that they planted in physicians' backs back in 2009, with their about-face on Obamacare. Ideology got in the way of advocacy then, and I won't be surprised if that happens again now.

the AMA is sort of a joke. Large representative body for sure but not really much of voice for physicians that work everyday.

When watching the democratic debates its literally going to come down how many social problems you can solve with "democratic socialism"

1. Rent is too damn high - "Democratic socialism" cue applause
2. Think your 100 dollar visit to the doctor is highway robbery - Democratic socialism cue wild screaming clapping from brainwashed audience
3. College tuition got you down? - Hey Democratic socialism
4. Neighbor too rich? - Democratic socialism
5. Daycare for the kids - Need I say more?

The AMA as far as I can tell shares these sentiments - if the vote was too close to call. They send me pointless letters in the mail I see no reason to send them anything.
