amca gpa calculations

Hey Everyone! I think that there might be other threads on this but I just couldn't find one, so here goes! I was wondering if the amca app calculates gpa instead of just taking the one on your transcript. This is because the college at which I take classes this is how credit is given:


Credit Points per Credit Hour
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7


So if I got a A- would the amcas calculate it as a 4.0 or a 3.7? Thanks for the help🙂

I think all colleges calculate their gpa's like that, correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, I don't think that AMCAS takes minuses into account. I'm pretty sure that their gpa calculation works like this:

A 4.0
A- 4.0
B+ 3.5
B 3.0
B- 3.0
C+ 2.5
C 2.0
C- 2.0
D+/- 1.0
F 0

Just try typing in various grades, and see what happens 🙂

I think it goes like this:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

As I understand it, AMCAS can't use plus or minuses because at some schools they are used only internally or not at all. And it wouldn't be fair if you earned a + but weren't given credit for it like someone at a school where the + shows up externally. So, they just do away with them altogether.

AMCAS is definitely using +/- 's in calculating my GPA for this application cycle, which is also how my college does it.

A+ 4.0
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7

I dont know what the heck wolferman is talking about, they keep the +/-s if your school offers them. If they dont, then you just get the standard A,B,C system.

So the OP is right, that is the system used in scoring. An A- is a 3.7. Trust me, I would LOVE for an A- to be a 4.0 (or an A+ to be a 4.3) but its not the case. IF you school doesnt have +/-'s the above system still holds true, its just you ignore the extraneous values.
