amcas 2003: listing hobbies/contact info

for those currently completing the 2003 amcas, how did u go about listing hobbies?

i practiced classical piano in hs and also took martial arts lessons then. should i include this in my amcas? i.e. i still pratice both on my spare time, but i'm not attending the studios/communicating w/ the former instructors anymore. oculd i just put myself as the contact person?

You only get 15...if those are in the top 15, list them. Don't worry so much about the contact information, but list your instructor's contact information if you can. That is as long as they don't hate you.

or you could mention those activities in your personal statement like i did...and it became a point of conversation during my interviews.

i would list hobbies like that in the personal statement not your 15 activities. ALthough they are important, I wouldn't ever put a hobby in the top 15 (unless I didn't have enough to fill all 15 spots).

I think it's cool to put hobbies--it shows your well-roundedness. Just put your instructor as the contact person but explain that you practice individually,. They probably won't call anyway. It would be nice if you notify your instructors about this too, just in case they get a call.

When people say you only get 15 experiences so only put your best do lots of you have more than 15? I know I have less ECs than average but I do not have close to 15 things or am I missing stuff that I should be putting?

I am not even remotely close to finishing the AMCAS....is there a separate listing for "hobbies" or does that count under "post secondary experiences?"

I think it would actually be a disadvantage to list more than 10 things. The medical schools aren't going to spent that much time looking over each activity, so I think you should only put down meaningfull experience/sctivities... like aamc suggests.

damn, I think I only have 2-3 hobbies (none of which I can list contacts for). I'd be lucky to have the time to develop more. Damn, now I feel like I'm not that "well rounded individual...." sighhhhh what to do?? am I in trouble?

I have 1 hobby(started the Origami club), 2 research, 3 volunteer, and 1 internship... I also added Dean's list (only because I made it every semester and it's my only real award... not counting some lame $500 honors scholarhsip I got).

That only comes out to 8... and I could probably leave out the Dean's List and Math/CS tutoring... and I didn't bother to include that I was Honors Mentor. 🙄

Relatively_prime, most of these sound like Post Secondary Experiences....so I ask the question again--where do people put down their hobbies on the AMCAS section? It seems like you guys are using hobbies in your post secondary exp. help!

I think listing hobbies in the AMCAS is kinda silly... unless it's something really big... like for example you're a concert pianist.... or you'll had artwork displayed in a gallery. Otherwise I'd just mention it in the personal statement or secondary.

I wouldn't put hobbies unless you've won awards, otherwise they detract from your other accomplishments, especially since AMCAS doesn't list your activities in the order you want.

In my AMCAS last year, I wrote that I was a writer, blah blah blah, a self-taught jazz pianist, blah blah blah. I think it made admissions officers think I was vain and didn't have much more to offer. They probably got bored and stopped reading and missed my real awards.

I would let admissions know of your hobbies through a recommendation or an application essay. Really mention it during your interview.

I checked out the application and saw where I was getting confused..plus, your comments helped. 🙂 Thanks guys. I thought there was a whole other section on hobbies and I felt scared....who has time to do more than 1-2 hobbies anyway? Thanks for your help!
