does anybody know how amcas calculates gpa or where i can find this info? like, if you got a d or f in a course, and then repeated it for an a, how does that work? because as of right now i have no idea what my gpa is because of retaking several courses early in my college career, and i would kind of like to know before i am actually in the process of applying. thanks 🙂

they take into account the grades from courses before they are repeated.

Check out these links:

AMCAS 2006 Instruction Book (heads up--it's 1.97 MB)

Grade Conversion Guide

Both grades will be calculated into your gpa for AMCAS.

bwells46 made a really cool GPA calculation program on Excel. You can find a link to it in the last few posts of the Useful Applicant Links Sticky thread at the top.

As you will see from the grade conversion guide link, the GPA calculations vary depending on the grade system at your school (e.g., half-steps or plus-minus system). bwells46 has one for half-steps and another one for the plus-minus system. Choose accordingly. If you're on a different system, you might just need to modify his programs.

so then, the first grade and the second grade are both taken into account like they would if they were separate courses?

i have friends who put down "0 credits" for a couse they retook. They still put down the real grade, as it was covered ont he transcript, but as a result, it wasnt calculated into the gpa and didnt make an impact

um, wow, is that allowed? isnt that like cheating? they got accepted and no one questioned this?

they're aplying right now. their amcas was processed and verified. it may be ok, beucase the grade is still there, and schools will still take it into consideration. i told them to just take the hit on the GPA and not risk anything, but they really didnt want to. we'll see what happens
