Hey all,

so my questions are,

1. What is the exact meaning and purpose for the AMCAS GPA?
2. Does medical schools go based off AMCAS GPA or your regular undergrad GPA?
3. and Does AMCAS screen your application for atleast a 3.0 GPA before even verifying your application? and if this is true do they use their AMCAS GPA for this screening or your undergrad cumulative GPA
4. How forgiving are med schools about your current Undergrad GPA if you have another year to bring it up? do they wait for that undergrad GPA to come out once graduation? or they just go based off your junior GPA standing?

1) It's a GPA calculated by AMCAS, intended to clearly define what is allowed into the science GPA and normalize applicants/remove weird things like A+ = 4.33 (Rice) or a numerical grading system. See here and here

3) No, AMCAS does not screen anyone out, they're just a middleman organizing your apps for med schools to look at. Med schools may screen you out, and if they do, they use AMCAS GPA to do it.
4) They go by your GPA at the time of applying. You can send update letters to tell them about good grades you make during the app cycle if you're making an upward trend.

Continuing on with this...when AAMC releases all of their statistics with applicants' GPA, etc. such as on the MSAR and stuff, are they referring to the sGPA or cGPA?

sGPA and cGPA can be separately found in both the MSAR (shows 10th and 90th percentiles to the 0.01 for cGPA and 0.1 for sGPA) and the AAMC tables (like https://www.aamc.org/download/321494/data/factstable17.pdf which gives sGPA, all other GPA, and cGPA data)
