Hey Everyone,

I had a question about how the AMCAS calculates science courses done at a community college. I began my college career roughly but my community college allows us to have our grades expunged and will show up on our transcripts as receiving an 'X' grade. I have to wait two years before I can petition to have my previous grades expunged and then I'd have to restart but I was wondering how would the AMCAS and medical schools calculate grades? Would that hinder my chances of getting accepted into an allopathic school even if I can explain why my grades suffered initially and taking time off then returning to school and doing stellar in my courses again?

Thank you guys for your feedback!

You have to report all courses you have ever taken, even if your school has internally "expunged" them. As long as you have demonstrated an upward trend in grades I wouldn't stress it.

Good luck!

Science classes taken at a community college and expunged are still treated the same way as a science class taken anywhere else. Factors into the GPA the same. You need to submit all transcripts. You'll be fine as long as you demonstrate a strong upward trend. Many successful applicants have rough starts very similar to yours.

If the "X" grade does not count towards your community college GPA (similar to a W), then it will not affect your GPA.

I suggest reading the AMCAS instruction manual.

"If no grade appears on your transcript and you have not received a grade, a grade entry is not required unless the course has been subsequently repeated or removed due to academic bankruptcy or similar institutional policies. For the initial attempt of a course that has been repeated or removed due to academic bankruptcy or similar institutional policies, enter the original grade earned before the course was repeated, regardless of whether it appears on the official transcript or is included in your GPA. Failure to enter the original grade received for repeated courses can lead to returned applications, missed deadlines, and forfeited fees."

And just to add to this: they are treated as the original grade; failure to comply with this can result in action taken against you, so make peace with the fact your initial poor performance will lower your gpa but do well henceforth. It's not an uncommon scenario.

Bringing this back because I have a similar question..I have an "I" for one of my graduate courses and an "X" (no grade received) for another because I left my master's program permanently before a semester was complete due to a family crisis. How do I enter the "X" course?
