I just have a few questions about the whole amcas application. I wanna make sure I have everything possibly done for the 2006 amcas. When is the first possible time to submit amcas? Also, besides the personal statement, what else can I have ready to submit? Thanks. Also any advice would be great.

You can log in to the 2005 AMCAS site and review the application. It shouldn't really change that much. First day to send it in is June 1st.

I forget about the timing of when you can submit an application, but it should say on their website.

But apart from the personal statement, there is a section on writing specific descriptions of your volunteering activities, awards, etc.

Basically just get your CV in order.

Most peopled submit as earliest as they can, that is, after April MCAT scores come out and they have chosen their schools.

The other time consuming parts are listing and describing 15 ECs and awards in 500 characters each, and entering all your coursework exactly as they appear on your transcript.

How about transcripts? Do you send them in before you complete the amcas profile? Should they be sent in prior to June 1st for optimal timing? Thanks.

You can generally log onto the application earlier than June 1st. This year, I logged on around May 15th, completed my app, then submitted the night of June 1st (the earliest it allowed, I checked often - it said June 2nd, but let me submit the night of the 1st). I had already sent my schools the transcript requests directly off AMCAS so they got to AMCAS and got routed right. Then it just sat until July or so when AMCAS actually submits it (well it did get verified and all the jazz).

Thanks moosepilot. So I guess I don't physically have to go to my school's registrar and ask for transcripts then? AMCAS sends something to request them? I always though my school charged for getting legal transcripts. :/

actually AMCAS provides something called "transcript forms" which includes pertinent info like your home address, your school's address, and a request for transcripts to be sent to AMCAS in washington DC. you print this from the AMCAS site

You actually have to mail the form to your school, or take it in person to your school's registrar.

Yes, Derf's right. Some people don't realize this and think that simply by filling the forms out they get electronically transmitted to the school. That's not true. You have to print the form out, mail it with any required money, and mail to your college registrar. The form just helps the registrar provide exactly the right thing, to the right place, and AAMC to file it correctly. That's the time limiting step, so do that as early as possible.

Can I do it before June 1st though?

this year, AMCAS began accepting transcripts May 1. So, I would print the forms and mail them to your school around April 15 - 20, depending on the speed of your registar

The dean of our med school once told us that its not too great of an idea to send the app in on the first day...to wait like 3 or 4 days, since the first applications will be at the hands of inexperienced folks.

*shrugs* But then, sometimes I think these guys have fun just making us dwell too much on such things.

Inexperienced folks at AMCAS or the school?

I didn't have any trouble with AMCAS. I didn't have any trouble with the school. I had to withdraw my application for military reasons, but they had it on their desk ready to send me a secondary. If your favorite schools use rolling admissions... I'd send it early.
