Hello,

As I was studying AML in BRS Path and First Aid, I felt like I had a decent grasp on it. However, when I did some QBank, the questions asked about specific stages of AML, like what stage of AML would be classified predominantly by promyelocytes, etc.

Do we have to know the classification staging system of AML?

Also, are ammonium magnesium phosphate (struvite) crystals of the kidney radioopaque or radiolucent? BRS Path and First Aid present opposing opinions. Thanks

I am in the same boat with a couple topics from Q-Bank. On the AML classification questions (there are at least 3) I just guess and move on. They also love the various forms of Amyloid and all the HLA markers and translocations. The good thing about the HLA's and translocations is that by the end of Q-Bank, you will know all of them weather you want to or not.

From my studies I remember renal stones as they are all opaque except for uric acid stones which are lucent. I am sure someone will correct this if I am wrong.

My feeling on AML classification is that NBME will be more creative with this topic then seeing if we can memorize the classifications. Auer Rod pics, Rx with Vit A, DIC with release of Auer Rods from lysosomes and differentiating btwn CML and AML from blast % are things I am thinking are more HY points.

Again, anyone that has taken the exam and knows different, please let us know.
