About how much of Organic 2 is on the DAT? I changed my major to Biology kind of late, and sorta new to the whole Pre-Dental thing. I'm going into my senior year, and my original plan was to take a super senior year and apply in fall of 2010, but I've had three people (2 dentists, 1 advisor) tell me to just take the DAT and apply to dental school this year even though I haven't finished the Organic sequence yet. I'm in Organic 1 for the summer, and won't be taking Organic 2 until the fall. My cousin, who's a dentist said that there wasn't much Organic 2 material in '96, but I'm sure it's changed since then. He said to take it at the end of the summer and I should do fine. So if I don't take Organic 2 before the DAT, but I manage to do amazingly on the Organic 1 material, approximately what score do you think I'll get?

Thanks in advance!

From what I remember, (and granted it is possible that schools move around when they teach different material), there was a pretty good chunk of questions from Ochem 2 - Aromatics (3-4), one carbohydrate question, lots of ketones and aldehydes - all which I had during Ochem 2.

So it's really up to you, and while it's very possible that you could learn this material on your own, you're at a disadvantage. If you're really serious about applying this cycle, you could always give it a shot. Just don't take the DAT until you're doing well enough in your practice tests.

Good luck!

There are q's from Orgo II part, but you know that if you get 5 Orgo II q's wrong you orgo score drop fast to below 20 I guess... you have to shoot for higher. If you master sample orgo II q's it may help but I don't know since I took both orgos before taking DAT.
Good luck.

So what are the some of the big concepts in Orgo 2 that I should try to understand if I do indeed end up taking the DAT w/o finishing the class? Vicviper mentioned Aromatics, Carbs, Ketones, Aldehydes... anything else?

up to 5 step synthesis problems, for which you have to know reactions from diff. parts of the orgo II. It's like studying nervous system at the end of anatomy course where you have to recall bones, ligaments, and muscles that bound specific nerves.
Correct me if I'm wrong, guys/gals.
GL.

Yeah, I agree with Chesnok. I did have some 4/5 step ones on my practice tests, but I think my actual test only had like 3/4 step ones, I think I had a 4 step with with aromatic additions. I felt that although much of the basics was learned in Ochem I, and you could technically use those basics to understand the more advanced material (Just about everything is SN1/SN2 or E1/E2 anyways!) - but most of the reactions that I was tested on came from the second half of Ochem ... and I think that's how most Ochem classes are structured anyways, basics in Part I, then pile on the reactions in Part II.
