Hey everyone, I have a rather interesting situation that I'd like to hear your advice on! This fall I'm transferring to a new univesity (didn't like the old one), and to my dismay of course transfer students had the least priority in registering for classes. As such, all the sections of Organic Chem that my school offers were completely full by the time that I was even able to register. I emailed the professors, and was promptly put on a 30 person waiting list, and I doubt that there will be a space for me in the class.

The trouble is that with my transfer and tighter schedule, not taking Organic Chemistry I next fall would delay my application to medical school by another full cycle/year (I'm already on track to take a gap year/5th year before applying).

My options are either to take Orgo I in the spring and then Orgo II in the fall, which would mean taking Biochem a semester off track and delaying my application by a cycle, or take it this fall at my local community college. What should I do? I'd rather not be put another year behind, but I heard that taking a prerequisite at a community college is a big "no no".

Also, there's no option for me to take Organic this summer, since no college in my area offers it.

Thanks for your help!

Explain your situation to the chem department and if they have any sense, they will override you into a class. I've successfully done this before for chem. Just light a fire under them. It's not like they are running out of desks!

I have, and hence the 30 person waitlist. I think the limiting factor is lab space, so while they might not be running out of desks there's definitely a limited space in their labs...oh well...

If you are a chem major of bio chem major (and sometimes if you are not), try talking your/their department undergraduate course advisor and they might be able to override the block themselves.

I have, and they directed me to the waitlist. I guess it's not fair to the other students that have been waiting, and that's true. I mentioned the possibility of opening another section, and all I got was a mouth full of "BUDGET CUTS" "NO WAY POSSIBLE" and yeah...

Do not take this at a CC. This would be a huge red flag in your circumstances.

The price you pay for transferring is taking the scenic route to medical school. Enjoy the sights. This could end up being a big plus for your application if you are able to make the most of the extra time.
