Ever since i decided to attend an osteopathic med school, ive been placed in the situation of explaining what the osteopathic philosophy is. One lonely afternoon, I thought up an analogy that would make the explanation a lot easier..
I figure allopathic medicine is like microsoft and osteopathic medicine is like apple. a few comparable points can be made:
- Both are parallel computing operating structures. although windows is huge and apple is significantly less prominent in the US, there are the select few that will vouch for apple any day over windows due to the lack in stability, etc... similarly, a a select group of people will prefer DO's to MD's due to thier own reasons, which i dont think i need to get into
- just like medicine, the general public associates medicine with MD's rather than DO's, just like the general public associates computing with microsoft rather than apple. but neverthelss, both perform the same overall functions and provide the same enormous service to the general public
- although a lot smaller and less prominent, mac's are a lot more stable and in many cases are able to handle problems that pc's cannot, (ie. safeguards from many viruses, much more stable.etc) osteopathic medicine can provide in some cases, where allopathic med cannot
- when u hear that a person for microsoft you might get some "oooh's" and "aaah's" as is it is such a big name company, but probably not as many "oooh'" for a person employed by apple. likewise, having an MD next to ur name might needs no explanation, but a DO next to ur name will incite some raised eyebrows. still, both are programmers/physicians and both provide the same service to the company/population that seek its services
- programmers that work for microsoft are not people that ddint get job's at microsoft and decided to apply for jobs at apple. they are simply a different group of people that belieeve that apple could suit them better as a company. comparatively, those that attend osteopathic schools are geenrally not students that get rejected from allopathic schools, just students that find a better niche in osteopathic schools
- basically both groups, employees of microsoft and apple work in parallel to provide the same services and have chosen thier path because they enjoy thier chosen path whether it be the microsft or apple corporation, not because one is better than the other (although some might feel this way), but because of thier passion for developing computing needs to the public, just as us future physicans are learning through osteopathic or allopathic means because of our passion for medicine above all else
i might have rambled.. and it could be incoherent (its 3am) so i might have to edit it later to make more sense, but i thought id share in case anyone would like to use it as a comparison when trying to find a good analogy between DO's and MD's when explaining to a non-medically educated person.
feel free to correct me if this doesnt suit the comparison well. gracias.
