Ok guys, I am a sophomore right now at LSU and will have finished all of my pre reqs besides physics by the end of this year. My goal was to go home this summer (4 hours away from my school) and study all summer for the DAT and then take it before school starts at the end of August and then apply after my Junior Year.

Here is my situation. I was just recently offered a job, here in Baton Rouge, to work under an orthodontist this coming up summer and work full time, and then continue to work part time my junior, senior year.

My question is... What would you do? Would you stay at your college all summer and work AND study for the DAT? or just work all summer and take the DAT a different time? or lastly, just go home and study all summer and take the DAT right before school starts?

Why don't you ask if you should wear boxers or tighty whities lol?

The work opportunity sounds awesome. I would do it and study at the same time. If you're just a sophomore, then you still have plenty of time to study for and take the DAT.

Priority is the DAT first and then get in a minimum of 100 hours of shadowing... all ELSE is just FLUFF on the cake.

I am a full time dental assistant for a GP 3 days a week and perio for 1 day a week... and 1-2 fridays a month, I do pure front desk work.

What do they ask me during interviews?
"So what procedures did you observe while SHADOWING?"
(Why hello there! I think I have more qualified credentials on my application than 'shadowing')

Nonetheless, it would be a great opportunity and you'll learn a lot but you might become quite distracted by it in my opinion... I still stand by prioritizing your DAT and GPA first though...

I spent the summer after my sophomore year working FT in a dental office while studying for the DAT simultaneously. Wake up, go to work, come home and eat, study til midnight, repeat. Once I got within 2 weeks of my test date I cut back to half-time so that I could study for ~10 hours a day. It worked well for me, but if you get easily distracted while studying it might not work out because you have to really, truly study during the ~5 hours between work and sleep. Granted, I was in my hometown of the boring 'burbs and not with all my college friends in a fun city so it made it MUCH easier...

+1

I have 4 1/2 years experience as a restorative RDH (largest scope of practice for an RDH in the country) but because my stats are GPA 3.3 DAT 20/21/23 I still have no interview invites. Focus on your stats first.

It would be nice if the proximity to the orthodontist would leave some magic dust on you, which would translate into assured ds acceptance.

I would personally go with the ortho position. Just MAKE SURE that doesn't interfere with your school. You are still young and have lots of time to study for DAT, why not take a cool opportunity that sets you apart as a unique applicant
