1989 July test, question #97:

Which of the following arteries is NOT derived from the celiac trunk or its branches?

1. Left gastric
2. Short gastric
3. Gastroduodenal
4. Left gastroepiploic
5. Inferior pancreaticoduodenal

The key says 4, but as far as I can tell, the inferior pancreaticoduodenal comes off the superior mesenteric artery, so it should be 5. Did they key this one wrong?

The Inferior Pancreaticoduodenal Artery is given off from the superior mesenteric or from its first intestinal branch, opposite the upper border of the inferior part of the duodenum (NOT SUPERIOR).

It courses to the right between the head of the pancreas and duodenum, and then ascends to anastomose with the superior pancreaticoduodenal artery.

"Left gastroepiploic" braches off of the splenic artery. The splenic artey itself branches off of the celiac artery. "Left gastroepiploic" anastomoses with the right gastroepiploic artery which is a branch of celiac artery->common hepatic artery->Gastroduodenal artery.

You are absolutely right. "Inferior Pancreaticoduodenal Artery" is the answer. 🙂
