i'm going to be entering vet school in august and the primary advice i've heard current vet students give is to review a bit of anatomy before you get there. i'm not looking to do any hardcore studying; i already took a domestic animal anatomy class in undergrad but it was pretty much a joke. i was an ansci major so i already have a good understanding of basic basic anatomy, but i was wondering if you guys thought that buying the horse and dog anatomy coloring atlases by kainer (http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Anatomy-C...=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211491611&sr=8-3) would be helpful. someone said in a review on amazon that for tufts (where i'm going) this coloring atlas was way too basic, but i'm not looking to use it while i'm actually taking anatomy classes, i'm more just looking for a mildly entertaining (who doesn't love to color?) way to learn some anatomy that might be helpful.

the thing is, i'm wondering if anyone thinks this would actually be helpful- even though the anatomy learned in these books is somewhat basic for vet students, is it so basic that it's not worth the $70 to get both? or would it end up helping me not have to learn as much anatomy once i get to vet school because i've been reviewing some anatomy over the summer that will be applicable? if you don't think it's worth it, do you have any other suggestions for books that are not totally overwhelming but helpful in preparing for anatomy in vet school?

i did a couple of searches before deciding to ask about this specifically; some of the threads that came up did mention these books but didn't answer this specific question, so i figured i would ask before i went out and actually bought them. thanks 🙂

Great book for learning basics.👍 Dr. Kainer is one of my professors and is an awesome guy! Also consider getting the Anatomy DVD CSU made. The horse coloring atlas and large animal color atlas are also good investments.

I am almost finished my first semester of Vet school.

I am finding http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Anatomy-P...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211523375&sr=1-1 book really helpful.

The pictures are really big and easy to see (mostly A4 size). They are also line drawings so very easy to colour in.

The only problem is that the labels are numbers that you then have to look at the opposite page for the name. This is also really helpful though because it lets you quiz yourself before you look up the name.

It doesn't have any information about origins and insertions. Its just pictures.

Hi Jennifer,
For Tufts you may want to wait until you get some info from Tufts. We told our professors what was most helpful for us and what would have been useful to prepare. So you should get some suggestions for ways to prepare--one of the suggestions was a coloring atlas but I'm not sure which one.

thanks for your input!

angelo, if you don't mind me asking, did you do personally do anything to prepare for tufts that you found helpful? i'll definitely be on the look-out for that info from tufts 🙂
