Need some advice from you course-planning guru's:

This is my last semester before I apply in June and unfortunately Microbio and Anatomy (of chordates, unfortunately, not specifically of humans) are offered at the same time forcing me to choose between the two. What do you folks think is more beneficial to D school? Which would look better to an adcom? Does it even matter? I'll be taking this in conjunction with immunology. None of the other "high level bios" are pertinent so these will be my only two bios in spring.

The best advice I can give is take both if you can general Anatomy and fundamental Microbiology....if you already know which schools you are going to apply then chek their websites for their prereq courses ..although majority of the schools will have similar requirements...some schools are very specific about their prereqs...for example if UCSF is on your list the unsual course will be "Psychology" while Midwestern asks for both "Anatomy & physiology with lab and microbiology with lab"...harvard asks for "calculus II" and texas schools asks for "statistics".

You can also send an email to admission office of your DS with your syllabus and ask if that particular course will fullfill their requirements...for example Midwestern,AZ asks for Anatomy with lab and physiology with lab but they also take combine courses if they add up to their required credit hrs. limits.

I would check with each school to see if a chordate anatomy course will fulfill their anatomy requirement. I honestly don't think it would so I would take micro instead.

Good advice, thanks fellas. Im sure there would be some overlap in a chordate anatomy vs. human anatomy but I'm really not looking to learn all the nitty gritty reptiles and fish and everything else that falls under that phylum. It's odd that my school offers a standard human A&P I,II sequence but it's through the anthro dept, not bio.

I'm in chordate anatomy now and it's fulfilling the anatomy req and/or preferred lists for many schools.

why not both! the midwestern's require both with corresponding labs as a requirement tho. But Most schools do not require either, but it will Def help you to have an idea of what you will be getting into once you start DS. Especially Anatomy. Plus they are, IMO, the most enjoyable bio courses I've had that was not general/intro-type.

I would take micro now and take gross human anatomy during the 2013-2014 school year. The reason I say that is that I would suggest waiting for human anatomy vs chordate anatomy and since anatomy is largely memorization based it would serve you better to take it closer to when you start dental school.

Wow, this is weird. I was going to post on the forums asking the exact same question - microbiology or anatomy?

I read that in a study conducted asking 2nd year dental students which courses they think should be required for dental school - 70% of them said microbiology and 50% said anatomy

I would take micro now and take gross human anatomy during the 2013-2014 school year.

Yeah, I think that's what needs to happen at this point. thanks for the responses, I'm enrolled in micro and immuno for the spring!

I would say micro for sure. It's more relevant, plus A&P is more likely to kill your GPA

Thanks for your response. I'm currently enrolled in a 400 level physio class, so I'm hoping to find an anatomy specific class, rather than taking an A&P and risking significant overlap. I'm signed up to take micro next spring, and if I can find an anatomy class over the summer, that's when I'll tackle it.
