I have a choice to take either physics or anatomy, but which class is more relevent for a pre-med?

Physics. Will need it for MCAT. You can learn anatomy in college if you like.

There is no set time to take the MCAT, but traditionally, people take it between their second and third years.

Physics. It may make some of Physics 1 a little easier to grasp considering you've already been exposed to it.

Third and fourth years, actually. There are a whole lot more people taking a year off after college, though, and they would take it after their senior years.

I am taking it during my "senior year" except I am still going to school after the end of my senior year.

OP take whichever interests you more. Neither will be anywhere near the depth you will need later and the profs in college will assume you have never seen the classes before.

I don't know what your school's policy is, but at my school you can double up on science classes by getting your credits for other classes (usually art or music related ones) waived. You could propose doing this if you are interested in taking both physics and anatomy and think that you can handle the load academically. I am currently taking both honors chemistry and anatomy, (I got my art class waived because I have very little interest in art). I will take physics next year and an AP science class senior year. If you can only take one class, however, I would definitely take physics.

Good luck! 🙂

Personally I recommend being a little well rounded, at least through HS and some of college.

I'd love to have the time to do some real art.

me either, but music is an art and that and I always did mix. I like Psych and History and economics and politics and that's why I love college I can takes those as well as Sciences.

Are you in high school? I'd take physics. The physics on the MCAT is probably high school-level physics based on what I remember. Theres close to no anatomy on the MCAT and you'll forget all of what you learn anatomy-wise in HS by the time you get to med school anyways.

If it's anatomy and physiology you're talking, the MCAT has a good deal of physiology in the bio section, so I don't know if physics really has much of an edge in term of preperation.

Take whichever you think will be more fun, in the end you'll probably have to relearn either of them by the time the MCAT rolls around.

Either will help you.

I wish I had taken anatomy in high school because I had trouble with anatomy in college (not understanding it, just the fact that there's so much to learn). Of course, I also wish I had taken physics in high school (damn performing arts magnet school....lol).

Actually, a lot of people who took physics in high school are now on the brink of failing physics in college. Mainly because they got cocky and stopped coming to lecture because "I took this class in high school, its cool." So if you do take physics this year, don't become one of those people in college.

(Sorry I have the tendency to go off on tangents). If I were you, I would probably go for anatomy. There's a lot of info to cover and I would have appreciated having more of a foundation for that.

Physics isn't that bad (I'm talking your standard algebra-based general physics course), I've got an A in it and I never took it in HS.

You should have made this a poll.

Go with physics. If you take anatomy at all during college it won't be until later in your life. The physics knowledge may actually be helpful to you in early college though. Senior year I didn't pay attention in physics. Did fine in the class itself but it didn't help me too much for college level physics. Don't do that and you may find it beneficial.

Take both. Thats what I did in high school. 😉 But if you have to choose, I'd definitely go with physics.

In general, I always recommend taking as many conceptual classes as possible. Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology... etc. These classes are a lot like learning to ride a bike. Once you get it down, you never really forget it. Or at least, you will retain the information for much longer. And as others already mentioned, the MCAT's are tested on these subjects.

Rote memorization classes such as histology, anatomy, cell biology and microbiology are nice (and even fun, if you have a high tolerance for pain), but they don't have much staying power. You will have to re-learn ALL of it in medical school.

Physics. Physics was the bane of my existence when I had to take it and the people in my class who had taken it in high school were definitely at an advantage. The only Physics I had ever been exposed to prior to College Physics I was like 2 weeks of calculating velocity in 10th grade. If your high school offers a Physics class, I would definitely recommend taking that one. Anatomy & Phys is more interesting in my opinion, but it's not as difficult as Physics at the college level(at least personally).

Erg, Physics scares me... I think I'll take it next year... or over the summer at the college. Will you be taking AP or regular? Depending on your course load Anatomy tends to be easier for those of us who are less mathmatically inclined but you'll definately need it. If you're for sure going to take it in High School though (which is probably a smart idea) than I would make sure not to put it with any other really tricky classes.

I, like the extremely intellegent person I am, put it off and took Human Phys and Anatomy this year and now my senior year, if I don't take it over the summer, will end up taking AB Calc and Physics at the same time. Fun.
