would you say that the mechanical digestion that occurs in the stomach is through the formation of chyme?
 
Ok, so guard cells release Solutes (I think sodium) at night to get smaller. During the day (by active transport) fill up with solutes and hence osmosis causes them to get filled up turgor, which will force the two guard cells apart and stomata opens.
Basically, close at night to lessen water loss. During day open to take in CO2
This only applies to C3 plants.
There are C4 and CAM plants which are a bit more complicated and are closed more often in the day to conserve water.
They don't need to open stomata for CO2 (to take in CO2) because they have some compound stored in their vacuole that can release CO2. This is CAM plants I think.
C4 plants use ATP to transport the CO2 from the Mesophyll cells closer to the leaf surfaces to the bundlesheath cells in the Vascular veins, where they store CO2, the bundle sheath has less O2 around so this increases productivity and also conserves water in the process.
