I have been told repeatedly that undergrad majors do not really matter as far as medical schools are concerned but I have also heard that certain schools place a big emphasis on research and prefer applicants with a sci background. If this were really the case, could anyone please tell me which known med schools (particularly in NY) fit the latter category?

Easy question to answer -- look up which schools get the multimillion dollar NIH grants. A few examples are UCSF, Stanford, Hopkins, Harvard, etc. I'll stop b/c the answer is at this link:

Who knows better than the admissions office of each school you are interested in? Get it from the source. Contact the schools and ask.
