You mean they actually let you guys stick around for another 3 years??? What are they thinking? They must not have read my recommendation.... 😀

Seriously, congrats guys 👍 they would've needed a congressional investigation if you guys hadn't matched here! Just don't forget about the rest of us now... 😉

3 years of applying, 3 years of stress ....

19 interviews later.... (over the course of 3 years)

2 years of rejection....

I MATCHED!!!!! FINALLY!!!!

I'm going to Vanderbilt.

Holy smokes! I still can't believe it! I'm trying to get over the fact that I will not have to do General Dentistry for the rest of my life! NO MORE ROOT CANALS!

Congrats to everyone else who matched! I'll be seeing you at the ortho meetings!

Griffin,

Let me be the first to say it...congratulations! Way to hang in there.

Way to go Griffin! Determination pays off! 👍

WOW! according to the match site that just opened up.....there are two ortho spots that did not fill this year. both at UNC?!?!?! what is going on. whoever didn't match needs to get on that!

That's exactly what I thought! Of all the places to go unfilled, both at UNC? I guess that means they didn't rank enough people because the ones they did rank ended up elsewhere.

exactly. if you look at the stats page they ranked 1.7 times the amount of spots they had. the national average was ranking 4.5 times the amount of spots they had. at my interview at UNC they told me they were interviewing more this year than any other. i felt it was one of the best programs i interviewed at, ranked them as #2, and am shocked that happened. would love to hear how this pans out, you have to figure that everyone they interviewed matched somewhere so if they are going to fill these spots, some lucky person who did not match at any program and did not even get a chance to interview at UNC will be going to one of the best programs in the nation. jpollei, waiting, grtuck, tarheel......whats the word?

Congrats griff! Ive been on this site long enough to see all your ortho highs and lows, but its great to see determination pay off. The way you feel about ortho is the way I feel about pedo....Ill apply till the day I die....you're now an inspiration to me and probably many others.....Congrats again

Relieved with the match -
Maybe my hemorrhoids and that nervous twitch in my left eye will go away now?!

Congrats to Griffen for NOT selling out and going OEC programs "just"to get into ortho

any other unmatched positions aside from UNC???

There was one other program with 1 unmatched spot, but they requested to not be put on the match website. If you go to the match site and check out the statistics page they explain this. So, out of 255 match positions, apparently 252 were filled.

called UNC...they said it was a mistake. not sure what to make of that. hmmmm i guess the other program we'll never know 🙂 maybe i'll harass a few in my state.

seems like a rather big "mistake." mistake meaning they didn't rank enough people or mistake meaning the wrong info was entered into the match system. if i didn't match i would seriously be questioning what other mistakes were made in the process of matching.

OK, two things. First, I matched at UNC.

Second, the whole thinkg about the MATCH site and 2 open seats at UNC boils down to this...apparently there was an error in submitting the lower portion of their rank list. That said, IMO I'd bet that they will use the two "chairs" to accept the next two highest ranking students from their list who are not already matched. Just a guess, though.

I got LSU!!!!

Oh wait, i'm already here. Oh wait, i'm an OMFS not an ortho guy.

Damn if i was smart enough to be an ortho guy i'd be looking for a job right now.

..Good job guys, have fun with residency, its way more fun than being a student....kinda.

first: congrats jpollei! second: that is a huge mistake someone made there. i mean not handing in your whole rank order list?! proffit said at the interview......"if previous years are any indication, all of you are going to match somewhere." i tend to think he was right. i think that there is a slim chance that anyone who interviewed there did not end up matching at another program.......i could be very wrong though. regardless, "mistake" is not a word you want thrown around on match day and someone dropped the ball big time on that one.

3 from UNC are going UNC? 😕

Um, maybe 4...that said, something like 7 of the top 10 on UNC's rank list were non-UNC applicants who went elsewhere (per the match stats, etc.) So at least no one can say UNC only takes their own if the majority were non-UNC'ers...seems many applicants just chose to go elsewhere this year.

But enough about UNC seats on this thread. Where else is everyone all going?

must have been a stressful day.....if you know what i mean. But I'm glad things worked out for you.

Got the email at 8:14. Houston. Awesome. Congrats griffin and everyone else!

Gary, I just realized I met you at Houston's interview. You came in a little early on your pre-interview day (Thurs) and I bumped into you in the resident's room at lunchtime. Congratulations on UNC. Hope to see you in Michigan.

Yep. 🙂

Hey Taylor and Kaci, congrats on UW!

had 97 boards average, top of class, research, teaching/volunteer stuff, went to prestigous undergrad, applied to over 20 programs, only got 4 interviews, none at what you others call 'top tier', got great vibes from the residents at the gatherings and even had faculty interviewing me give great feedback..i am not 'socially awkward' by any means......got in NO WHERE. I almost feel as if the programs led me on.

So to all you who matched....jpollei, and your UNC friends, what were your board scores? what do you think set you apart? And if you dont mind me asking, how old are the people you know that have matched? Im barely 25 and feel like that was seen as immature compared to some of the late 20's/early 30's married folks I encountered on my interviews.

why does it seem like only UNC students got in or are you guys the only ones on his site?

We Nova didn't do too bad this year for Ortho:

5 out of 6 applied will be Orthodontists:

Univ. of Washington (match)
St. Louis (match)
Nova Southeastern University (match)
Colorado (non-OEC)
Loma Linda (non-match)

Proud of my colleagues! 👍

I'm 27, married with 2 kids, and got 1 interview(good vibe too), and no match. So who knows. And yes, the whole UNC "mistake" sucks. I spent half my morning trying to get ahold of them.

got the same response.....I called UNC around 1pm EST and said I was calling regarding the unfilled match positions to which I got the following response "There are no unfilled spots."

about 8 or so UF students matched this year.

Baylor
MCV/VCU
New jersey
UF
UF
LSU
Montefiore (sp?)

Tough act to follow. We shall see Jan 31

Honestly I have so much admiration for you....congrats, you deserve this!!!!!!

Can you offer any advice for those of us that didnt match this year but were super strong academically? For instance, what do you think is the best thing to do the year after graduating to increase your chances of getting in the following year (assuming your weakness was lack of experience)??? do you think a GPR, AEGD, private practice, or research is best?

The more I talk with others who have gotten in this year and in the past...i'm starting to feel like there's alot more politics involved then i thought....like who you know and who your father knows, and who your ortho program director knows, and what programs favor what schools........am I the only one who feels this way?

gatordude, do those figures include the UF students that applied for ortho and are at UF doing a 1 year fellowship, or are those from the D4 class only?

WOW...10% of the class got into ortho.....that seems like alot from one school

about 10-12 applied to Ortho
6 or so applied to Pedo
3 applied to OMFS
1 applied to Perio and accepted
No Endo
1 Pros accepted
15 (+/-) AEGD/GPR applicants with most accepted

36-40 students = 50% 😱

Hope I match 😕

A lot of people around UCLA were super happy today. We had a record 17 people match into ortho. So, in total we had 19% of the class match into ortho. Not counting international students who join us for years 3 and 4, otherwise it's 17%. Unbelievable.

congrats to those that matched. myself i wasn't so fortunate despite the 4 interviews which i thought went well. question: any info about the florida ortho fellowship???is it a paid position?? how have previews fellows done?
otherwise i think i'm gonna work for a year and save up so i can now apply to more schools (certain schools in ny, and mass) that charge over 30K/year.
any advice from the re-applicants who got in would be nice.
interesting facts about ucla. wow now that's impressive (assuming these numbers don't include oec programs).

would 17 match from UCLA if they ranked their students? something to consider for those applying to dental school who know they want to specialize. study like hell for part 1 and you are set.

Board scores from 95-98; ages from 25-29...have to admit there seems to be an overabundance of people who really should have gotten in that didn't end up finding a home anywhere. And we're probably the only ones on here. 🙂

Anyone else finding it hard to study for boards? What little motivation I had before today is now completely gone.

agreed. motivation gone. it will be interesting finally taking a test while in dental school where all that really matters is passing.
