So I just completed an away rotation at one of the places that I am seriously considering for residency. I came in 15 min to 30 min early every day, went to the morning meetings when they had them, stayed late, actively sought out extra things to do if nothing was going on (such as going down the GI suite to see if anyone needed help placing lines) and was always showing interest.
The evaluation is based off of two attending's that we must have grade us. I was getting lots of positive feed back from residents and others during the whole month (some were shocked i was staying as late as I was) and I spent lots of time with one attending who let me put in spinals and nasal airways, who I also asked to write a letter for me. I really thought I made a good impression but when I got my grade online it just said "pass". I honestly don't know what went wrong and I don't know what to do. The evaluations are based out of 1-10 and I received mostly 8's and a few 9's but no extra comments were put anywhere. My spirit has been crushed because I really put in the extra effort to make a good impression. I even gave one of the evals to the physician who is writing me a letter which makes me even more confused. I asked to speak with the person in charge of sending in our evaluations tomorrow to see what happened but i feel really discouraged and worried that this is going to look bad at other programs because all they see is the pass. Will this hurt my chances at some of the bigger programs? what should I do?

as a side not my grades are great I am top of my class with with a 248 step 1 669 comlex and about to take step 2 in two weeks but this was my first anesthesiology rotation.
P.S its also frustrating because the students from that institution were leaving hours before me at 12 and 1 and i am sure they got at least a pass.

Sorry to hear that. I've had the same thing happen to me. All 9s and 10s then 'Pass.' Even asked the guy what I should be doing to improve and got nothing but praise. Then I asked why only 'Pass.' His answer was that he NEVER gives Honors. WTF! I'm thinking that they just don't realize that it's basically a C.

I'm only OMS-IV too so I don't have real feedback on how it will affect you, but a strong letter, which it sounds like you earned, should help. Mostly just commiserating. Sounds like all your other creds are strong so hopefully it's no big deal.

Best of luck!

Are you even sure they have honors for away rotators? Even if they do you're freaking out over nothing. On paper you are a solid applicant, assuming you aren't a sociopath, you will match.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pretty sure that they do give out Honors you just find the right docs that are going to check it off for you. One of the docs I had do my evaluations is involved with admissions. I wish i could see the letter that the other Doc wrote for me that way if it's good then i don't have to be as worried about the grade. Felling more annoyed about it now more then anything else but unless they change the grade there is nothing I can do about it. Can anyone out there who has been around admissions committees comment on what they think when they see a student who did an away rotation at another institution who gets a pass on their audition. How much of a red flag is it? Thanks
