Are there significant opportunities in the private sector for CCM trained anesthesiologists to be full time intensivists?

Maybe Mil will pipe in....but if you do a forum search of the anesthesiology forum - this question has been addressed muliple times. IN fact you started a thread on this in the anesthesiology forum - so I guess you have looked there! Since I am probably going to do a critical care fellowship through the anesthesia route - I hope you get some good responses here too!

I have heard, as I am sure you have also, that there is a trend coming that would allow for anesthesia to branch out more into critical care. I can't speak specifically to that, but I can tell you about intensivists in my area. We have two full time house intensivists, and they are pulmonologists by trade. The pulmonologists function as intensivists when they are on the case, or they can be consulted specifically as intensivists. I would say be careful about the set up though because these guys are oncall straight for 7 days a week, rotating every other week.

No, not a lot in private practice....especially full time.

This was really interesting to read guys thanks 🙂. Do you happen to know what the hours look like for an anesthesiologist? I am trying to choose between obgyn or anesthesiology and I am wondering what the hours look like. Thanks 🙂

Um. Have you heard of the search function, or google? Also you're a premed, you won't be "trying to choose" for at least 4 more years, assuming you even get.

Don't you think that was a bit rude? Regardless, if it was a search button or not? 😕

Wow you are a nice person. LOVE IT. i love that you are thinking about becoming a doctor and you are a complete ass to someone who is asking a VERY SIMPLE QUESTION. love it! 🙂 Because I am such a nice person I'm going to let you in on a little secret...

Google is not, and has never been, completely accurate. I pray and hope to God that you do not rely on google to answer all of your questions regarding medical school. But since you are the type that uses google to answer all of lifes questions for you, i want you to look up something for me:

how to be a polite

thanks and take care : )

To be fair, no response on an internet forum should be taken as the gospel and is probably less than completely accurate. That said, the response, however rude, is correct. You should search (using the search function) at the top right of the screen if you are looking for results. And while you may have some idea as to what you want to do (and far be it from me to discourage someone from having an idea about what they want to do with their lives) you do have a minimum of 4 years before you need to decide what specialty to enter. Right now, focus on getting into medical school (depending on where you are in school that could mean getting good grades, getting health care experience, meaningful extracurricular activities, etc to interviewing well) and having fun. You may have ideas about what you want to do, but I can tell you that I had ideas too and in between my interview and matriculation, I've changed my mind. I'm guessing it will happen again to me and I'd be willing to bet a nice steak dinner you mind will change too.

There are anaesthetists in PP doing ICU. And with time there will be even much more, maybe even comparable to Europe and Australia.

In my experience, critical care jobs for anesthesiologists in private practice are had to come by. Most medicine positions also contain a pulmonology or sleep component to the group's practice. Most surgical positions want a surgeon who can take call. With that said, opportunities in the academic world are better. The ASA requires that anesthesia residents be taught critical care by critical care trained anesthesiologists, meaning all anesthesia residency programs must have at least one intensivist.

Hope this helps,

Glp1

Ha, ha. Really, we have to have an anesthesiology intensivist? Because our school has not a 1. Ok. lying, we have 2, but all they do is OR. Rumor is we have one coming. I would encourage all applicants to look morel closely at schools in which the ICU does have a strong anesthesiology presence. It honestly makes a difference as in med-school, ICU was an enjoyable experience, and now it sucks major ass. Why? Because we anesthesia residents get treated like crap.
