Hi All,

I am a IMG on h1b visa. I will be graduating from a very reputed anesthesia program in june 2014. Unlike my fellow Imgs I decided to apply for jobs instead of doing a fellowship. Initially I applied to very few jobs and interviewed only at one spot. Now even though I apply for many jobs in gasworks, I am not getting any response and also some hospitals are outright responding saying no visa candidates.

I gathered many tips from sdn posts about networking and cold calling. I have not found any specific thread with tips for imgs. I would greatly appreciate any help/tips/strategies from imgs/amgs who were successful in landing a job in Anesthesia.

Not doing a fellowship as an IMG? Big mistake! Get a fellowship, or get a job with a hospital that sponsors an immigrant visa. Private groups will not go through the pain of sponsoring you, not when they have tons of visa-free candidates lined-up, many of them with fellowships.

Nobody cares about how reputed your anesthesia program is; they care about what you can do. You are not board-certified, you don't have a fellowship, you need a visa. What are your pluses, dude? What did your super-special residency teach you that the next anesthesiologist does not know and the group needs? I hope you're dirt cheap, at least. </sarcasm>

Backup plan: get your residency program to keep you on as an attending and sponsor an immigrant visa. That is your best chance, at least until you get board-certified and visa-free.

It's a tough time for FMGs right now, actually the job market is tough for everyone.
If you can do a fellowship and stay in academia that would be your best option. In a few years things will change and there will be more jobs but now is not the right time for you.
