I was wondering if any of you experienced doc's out there would be able to give me some insight. I am ms-3 interested in gas. I am wondering If I am competitve and for which programs. I am 90% in first two years. expecting to be higher or same in next two. USMLE 220. DO student. I am also interested in setting up rotation in chicago or Michigan this year for both an introduction and to get a good experience. I read the thread on chicago programs. It was helpful but I am hoping for some more info.

Thanks apellous

U of M is top notch..the chair is excellent and is a resident advocate and residents are EXTREMELY happy...i was very much impressed by their program. MGH and Brigham were a far 2nd and third compared to this gem!
you will do every type of case and be taught there

Thanks apma 77.
Anymore would be great. ie what do you need to compete at good programs? places people liked and why.

Any other sites that I might want to try to get info would also be great.

Thanks

minimum score step 1 should be 210 and ofcourse honors grades/good letters of rec help...this ofcourse holds true for getting interviews at the better places

460 hits and only ampa 77 has any info on this. (by the way thank you too) do I need to say something like CRNA's cant hold a candle to an MDA or AA's are the future of gas, Mac is the smartest person on the forms and his line of thinking is as innovative as the theory of relativity to get any responses?

You guys/gals that just went though interveiws. where do you go. what did you here. what are they looking for in an applicant.

I am considering gas and EM and would like to know my options and any help would be great.

Thanks

LMAO. Well, I am a MD, not a DO, so I guess my info may be slightly off center for you (Not much though, from what I have heard. You are pretty competitive, you stand a very good chance at the good programs with your grades, and will certainly get interviews at most of the top tier programs (MGG, Hopkins, UPenn, ect), but getting into those will be tough even if it doesn't get any more competative than last year. Those top programs had very high avg step 1 scores and clinical grades, and took people from the top medschools. I didn't apply to any programs on CHI or MICH, so I can't help you there.

hey apellous:

Im a DO who matched MD anesthesia last year, now enjoying my smooth DO internship in sunny florida. I hope this helps.
To the best of my input, that USMLE score should get you great interviews............90 was cutoff for interviews at some top places. Program directors have said 2003 gas match was the most competitive applicant pool since 1984!

I graduated from NSU-COM florida, and we had 8 people match anesthesia. I was the only one who took USMLE...........others got in with only decent COMLEXES (500's)...........to good programs..............MAYO (FL), SUNY Downstate ny, Univ of Miami, Univ. of Maryland, military spot (texas). Only one of these guys took a DO residency, but he had worked previously at the hospital and already has a job lined up there.

One of my fellow interns from NYCOM told me 33 people in that class matched GAS..............but almost seventy had applied.

As a DO, my feeling is with your stats you will definitely match, but you maybe wont get top choice. Looking at program websites usually tells if they are DO firendly sometimes. Top programs seem to be gunning for AOA MD's (DO AOA doesnt count...ha!) and also are favoring surgery residents coming to their senses and transferring to anesthesia.(they transition well due to OR experience). Make sure to spend your electives at top choices.

Good Luck,
