I am applying for an anesthesia residency right now, and I know its early to be asking this, but I had a question about start dates for programs. I was trying to plan going on vacation between graduation and starting residency, and I was curious about how early most anesthesia residencies (or prelims) expect you to be there for orientation. I think I've heard a number of places have you start about a week before July 1. Is this right?

Some programs also have rotating entry dates, but it's been long enough that I don't recall many names. MGH did, at least until 3 years ago. Internship orientation started within a few days of graduation, if memory serves.

I started anesthesia residency in September, with about a week of orientation. That gave me enough time to do an extra month of critical care as a senior medicine resident at the end of internship, as well as take a couple weeks to move from Baltimore to Boston.

If you can at all manage, go to your orientations. You can pick things up as you go along, but it's better to get some of the basic info on living & working at your new home.

We started working on Jun 21st, with orientation starting Jun 16th. It was a bit painful, and one of my classmates BARELY had enough time to graduate and get out here before that since her program graduated so late.

Kudos to you for asking questions like this sooner rather than later.
